I tutor chemistry at my university and theres a girl I tutor every Thursday. I email everyone I tutor well before the session so that I know what kind of material to focus on. For my first session with this girl, she didnt respond to my email which was a little strange.

When I met her, she was different from the other people I tutor. When I asked introduced myself, she shouted her name back to me and started doing these head movements. She talks real loud to the point where people stare at us. For every problem we work, she takes out around 20 identical pencils and lines then up perfectly which takes some time. She goes into extreme detail about her life and some of the things that happen to her. When she does talk, she takes long pauses between words sometimes.

Ive displayed a great deal of patience so far but each session is becoming worse. She questions my knowledge of chemistry and tells me Im wrong constantly even though Ive already taken and passed this level of chemistry. When her pencils fall off the table, she starts moaning real loud. She breathes heavily as if she just finished a run. There are times where Im explaining something to her and she stares off into space and doesnt respond. Yesterday, she was angry that our session ran over the time limit even though I told her she was free to leave but she kept asking questions.

It is exhausting. Im not sure if she has some sort of disability or what. Im thinking of ways to approach my sessions with her differently but Im not sure what the best course of action is. To be completely honest, I would rather not deal with this. All she wants to do is her homework and Ive been told that as a tutor, we cant just help people with their homework. Our job is to help them understand whatever they need help on. Not literally sit down and go through homework with them. I dont think shell understand that though. Every other session with other students is great and I can even joke around and make learning the material fun. With her, its rough man.

I havent really looked at her like that but nah. Shes one of those girls who is young but could pass for 50 if that makes sense.

You tell her to take this seriously or she needs to find another tutor.

Whe she does weird things with pencils ask her why she is doing that.
