I've been doing this for over a decade after losing one to data corruption. My reasoning for is mired in a bit of superstition, but I've always figured that the flash media ejection function in the OS exists for a reason.

The write buffer may or may not have actually written yet.
Most of the time, they're used in "live" mode and the write-buffer just doesn't exist. Sometimes, however, a removable drive is kept in use by some process for some reason, and the only real way to know is to attempt an "eject" and be refused.

I've always done it, regardless of people making fun of me for it. Never lost data yet, so I see no reason to stop, it can't hurt to keep it up.

Yeah I've had an eject be refused before. It's rare but it happens. Presumably, if you had just pulled it instead, there would be problems.

I've somehow ruined multiple flash drives (and a USB adapter for microSD cards) just through my normal use, even though I'm not rough at all with them, so now I eject and insert/remove really carefully and everything because I'm tired of having them break on me.

Mine does that too. Usually everything will power on and then shut off before the monitor comes on.

Yea, using sleepmode if you have your OS installed onto a SSD can rarely rarely rarely fry it. It happened to me two years ago. Basically since SSD don't have the same physical limitation on reading and writing like an HDD, an overload of too much data exchange can occur and damage the hardware. It requires a perfect storm but it can happen.
