And please dont be asses about it, I'm trying to be genuine here.

But... he's literally a character whose only ever been in a single game (barring VERY small cameos). A game where hes not even the main character. A game only a fraction of a fraction of the fanbase has been able to play, due to how stingy rereleases have been.

Literally every single other character on the roster dances circles around him in terms of recognizability. Tell anyone who hasnt played the game (which is a stupidly high percentage of players) you want him, and they'll ask "who?"

Dont get me wrong, its be cool, but it just strikes me as so weird that GENO would be the hill so many choose to die on.

Ffs the poor bastard couldnt ever survive gamefaqs' shitty little popularity contest. And this is at the height of his "demand"

He is a cool character from a popular game that hasnt had a true sequel. He is in a limbo state because he is a Mario character not owned by nintendo. So neither Nintendo or Square has really used him or the other MRPG characters in a long time. Trying to get Geno into Smash is like a rallying call to Nintendo and Square that we want a true sequel to Mario RPG. I see it more as that then anything.

Smash revitalized Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus. Plus it gave a lot of exposure to Earthbound and Xenoblade. People would love for it to do the same for various dormant franchises they love. I wanted Isaac in smash not just because I like the character but because I hoped it would help bring attention to Golden Sun and help bring it back to life.

Within the game itself, Geno's role isn't even as large as minor characters in other Mario RPGs. I don't dislike Geno but I think what happened is that fans felt entitled to an appearance and have upped the ante for each Smash entry. It's far and away about him being warranted by his own relevance anymore regardless of what Sakurai sweet talks.

I personally was rooting for him because he's from one of my favorite RPGs and my favorite on the SNES. I know a lot of people like to scream nostalgia, but I still play Super Mario RPG and it's still a lot of fun. The only real flaw is it's a bit on the easy side, but otherwise it's an amazing game.

It also helps that Geno was a pretty powerful character all around.

Someone posted a video of a guy throwing a fit at the reveal not being Geno last night. It made me lol. Smash fanboys are crazy
