Just got past the second world, and I have no idea how kids beat this without 500 lives.

Really enjoying it so far though... Puzzle platforming done right.

SMB2 from All-Stars (Doki Doki)

Maybe I just suck at this kind of game, but this is like 300x more challenging than the proper 2D Marios imo

The only of the four All Stars game I beat was SMB1, and it was about 2 years ago.

These games are hard, man.

I'm rotating them each world

And it's not so much that SMB2 is difficult per se, but so many of the obstacles take serious trial and error to the point where you're running out of lives and restarting every 15 minutes.

This is stereotyping, but you realize that this is how you market to Japanese children

For real though, it was meant to be this way

So many people had mastered SMB1, and Nintendo needed to market the successor to the Famicom, the Famicom Disk System

So while Miyamoto was designing Zelda 1 for the launch, another team was just cranking out a tough-as-nails Mario 1 romhack to go with it.

Meh, SMB2 isn't too bad, it's the type of game that one simply needs to adapt and get used to and then you shouldn't have too much problem with it.

Now The Lost Levels on the other hand, that's a different story.

Mario 2 is pretty easy for an NES game, mostly because Peach's float lets her cheese most levels, though it's probably harder than most games released these days.

I do remember beating it to impress my friends back then so even a low difficulty NES game was a triumph to us kids.

SMB2 is reasonably tough though yeah there are many harder NES games.

But I'm pretty sure I consider it harder than every Mario released after 1990 for instance. (Hard to compare the 3D games directly of course.)

If you're bad at the slot machine I can see SMB2 being somewhat difficult. I feel like I die a decent amount in it but it has the Kirby problem of too many extra lives.

Like it's definitely tougher for me than SMB1 not considering the easy supply of lives available to you.

In the GBA version (and maybe All-Stars? I forget)you can pretty easily manipulate the slots, but in the NES version its way too fast to easily farm lives.

I feel like if you're aggressive with getting coins you can get 1+ 1-ups per level on average pretty easily even on the NES, which is plenty to get a pretty good stockpile. But it's been a long time since I've played it on the NES so perhaps I'm mistaken.

The only real thing that's tough about Mario 2 USA are the physics.

Physics are fucking awkward as hell and incredibly slippery....Coming to Mario 2 USA after playing World, Mario 3, and Yoshi's Island SNES is very jarring.

original Doki Doki Panic is a bit harder too, because theres no run button. Makes jumps harder and also makes some skips that Luigi and Peach can do in the USA version impossible

Toad nation represent

On second thought I may actually have a skewed opinion of the difficulty (and how many extra lives you get) due to always using Toad. He makes the platforming relatively tougher than Princess or Luigi and also allows you to get more slot coins

Yeah you get bonus World 9 with some weird (but not harder) levels

Also theres more difficult Worlds A-D that get unlocked in the All Stars version just by beating World 8, but in the original...

In the Famicom Disk System version of Super Mario Bros. 2, the player must beat the game eight consecutive times and hold down the A button on the title screen in order to access World A, and in turn the other later worlds.

Ultimately I find myself replaying SMB2 more than SMB3 so I think I prefer it all things considered, largely because of its uniqueness. SMB3, were I trying to be objective, is probably better, but if SMB2 didn't exist there'd be no replacement for me and SMB3 is done almost as well by like Super Mario World or even at a stretch Super Mario Bros 1 or Super Mario Land 2 in a lot of ways. Mostly Super Mario World though.
