I just looked it up and it's meta-critic and Rotten Tomato scores are immensely low. It's got 1s and 2s out of 10 across the board.

I thought was funny and regarded as a good comedy movie.

I mean sure the Cow and Baby CGI scenes were awful and thank god they took out that torture part which was terrible.

But it's just a fun goofy movie. The nonsense dubbing over the old Chinese movie was like MST3000 or Whose Line Is It Anyway and just made you chuckle

The trailers didn't convey it properly. When you sit down and watch it, it's not what you expected if all you had to go on was pretty much the cow fight part.

Some of us are pleasantly surprised by the type of movie it is, others are disappointed.

I can understand people not liking it, but to that degree is a little much. It's not on the level of those shitty "______ Movie" parodies.

The best description I can give for Napoleon Dynamite is that it's a movie that is consistently almost funny

I liked it when it came out when I was like 12 or 13

I tried watching it a few years ago, and I didn't really find it that funny.

Guess my taste just changed.

Everything in the movie directly involving dubbed-over footage is gold. Everything involving CGI or new footage (the baby, the cow, Tonguey, the Evil Council) is irredeemable. The exception is that the new footage towards the beginning with the present-day Chosen One battling is overall pretty good (as well as the line 'So on he walked... ...and sometimes, drove.').

For my tastes, the gold outweighs the crap and I still have a soft spot for the movie, considering that quoting it was basically a secret language in the few years after it came out.

I haven't seen it in probably over 10 years but man it was a mainstay of ours in college, watched it all the time. I need to watch it again... but probably won't be as fun without my buddies.

Niche films tend to do poorly with general audiences and especially critics, but do phenomenally with their fans. 13% critical score versus a 68% audience score is a big divided on RT. Same was the case for both Super Troopers films, though the original got a great audience score while the sequel (which was still great) got a middle of the road audience score while both fared very poorly with critics.
