Tragic. I'm assuming the gun belonged to the grandparents- if that's the case, they share some blame as it was accessible to this kid. Gun owners need to take responsibility for how they store and secure their weapons.

Children can, and should, be taught how to properly respect and use weapons if a parent chooses to, sure. But giving a child access to them without supervision is what leads to situations like this and a school shootings we've seen recently. Nothing wrong with the gun being accessible. The bigger problem is them allowing that while knowing the kid is either psychotic or mentally challenged. I assume this is a case where the kid was either constantly in trouble, or he possessed such a lack of understanding of the world that he shoudn't even have been around a butter knife without supervision.

Kids shouldn't have access to guns. Simple as that.

There's also the fact that even without a gun, this kid probably could've still did this crime with a non-gun weapon. While you can't really say the same for defending against a home intruder.
