An 11-year-old boy is dead after police in Arizona say he shot and killed his grandmother before turning the gun on himself.

According to KTVK, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said the boy's grandparents asked him to clean his room throughout the day Saturday, but he refused.

The couple was watching television, when the boy approached them from behind and shot his grandmother. Yvonne Woodard was struck in the back of the head, authorities said.

The boy's grandfather, Doyle Herbert, told police he ran after his grandson and saw him take a couple steps before falling to the ground.

The gun belonged to Herbert and the grandparents had full custody of the 11-year-old boy.

Tragic. I'm assuming the gun belonged to the grandparents- if that's the case, they share some blame as it was accessible to this kid. Gun owners need to take responsibility for how they store and secure their weapons.

Maybe read the article because

The gun belonged to Herbert and the grandparents had full custody of the 11-year-old boy.

Iffy on this. If you own a gun you'd want your family to know where it is and how to access it if they need it for safety.

An 11 year old shouldn't have access to a gun without supervision. Grandfather shouldn't have left the gun and ammo in an easy to access spot for the 11 year old.

Most 11 year olds are capable of proper firearm safety . . . if they've been taught, and they're not raging little psychopaths. I'm not saying they should or shouldn't have access, but parents should know their kids well enough to make the call.

Children can, and should, be taught how to properly respect and use weapons if a parent chooses to, sure. But giving a child access to them without supervision is what leads to situations like this and a school shootings we've seen recently. Children (and some adults) lack the maturity to control their emotions and not do things like this. Not all kids, but enough to warrant an extra measure of safety.

I never said they weren't. But kids are idiots and letting them have access to a gun without an adult to supervise is just asking for something bad to happen.

Nothing wrong with the gun being accessible. The bigger problem is them allowing that while knowing the kid is either psychotic or mentally challenged. I assume this is a case where the kid was either constantly in trouble, or he possessed such a lack of understanding of the world that he shoudn't even have been around a butter knife without supervision.

If we treated everyone like they were just a bad day away from murder the world would be very restrictive.

I'm sure that's happened, although I don't recall reading anything like that recently. My 9 sits on my coffee table because I live alone and know there's no risk to anyone by leaving it there. When I have guests and I'm not wearing it, it goes in the biometric safe.

Kids shouldn't have access to guns. Simple as that.

You need maturity to be able to own a gun and I think people under the age of 18 have no business touching one. Maybe they can learn to shoot under direct supervision but kids are dumb and will fuck up more than they don't.

There's also the fact that even without a gun, this kid probably could've still did this crime with a non-gun weapon.

While you can't really say the same for defending against a home intruder.

You don't need a gun to surprise attack someone that trusts you. But you do need a gun to protect yourself from an invader.
