There are several theories: that people miss the home button, that $750 is not an appropriate "budget" price, that nobody wants to buy "second best" with Apple products, etc.

I'd say it's probably a combination of the latter two.

i absolutely miss the home button. Tired of this 100% touch screen bullshit. Give me some buttons. Yes they get stuck over time and stop working but at least the phone knows when I'm trying to exit.

Did they? The iPhone 5 only lasted a year because of their whole "we can't have last year's tech looking like this year's; people will just cheap out and buy old tech too look trendy" philosophy that also applies to the X->Xs, hence the need for the Xr.

The 5c lasted over two (released in 2013 and then revised and sold until early 2016).

In comparison, if you want a budget samsung, it'll run you as low as $100, and many carriers have deals to get it free.

To be fair, when has an iPhone ever been "cheap"? Even the 5c launched at $550.

iPhone SE was $350 and came with a 4K camera, the A9 chip found in that same year's flagship, and all sorts of other new stuff.

Samsungs may be cheaper, but hoo boy are they not better at the lower price point.

I tried a $150 Galaxy Tab and weeks later I was doing anything to rid myself of it

Remember when this shit was embarrassing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH2w2l1JTs4" data-time="

$150 less and it was unabashedly sold as a "premium" console, the center of your entire home theater system, complete with Blu-ray support which was brand new at the time, with streaming HD video not even becoming a thing for the next 5-6 years or so

And that made Sony a laughing stock for years and cost them the 7th console generation

But Apple puts out a $750 "budget" phone, and nobody gives a shit. Wtf

Is the XR not free in the US? It's only $100 on a plan in Canada and everyone's doing deals right now to get it not only for free but also additional credit.

Everyone and their grandmother in the tech community was so sure this was going to be a hit. It still may very well be, but I never understood the logic for its initial success given the 3 obvious theories you proposed.

"It looks the same/built similar to the more expensive model" But it also costs about the same. Who can afford 750 before tax, but not 999? That's what, an extra couple bucks on your monthly plan? And now you've gotta let everyone know you're using the cheaper model with these loud colors. They learned nothing from the 5c.

1. Xbox 360 did especially well in North America because of PS3's enormous price and terrible optics early on, and it was popular to talk about going full "Wii60", to express disgust and disappointment in the PS3 after the PS2 was such a giant success

2. I don't know about Canada, but phones in the USA are generally sold as a deal where you can either buy your phones upfront, or pay them off over two years while increasing your phone bill a certain amount. So like, you might see an ad for a $100 iPhone XR, but then your bill will increase by $27.09 for the next two years, because $650/24 = $27.083~

Discounts usually lower that upfront cost by some margin, but you'll still have to pay it off over time.

It's kind of an absurd concept really.

I mean there are budget products, midrange products and high end products. What is this thing supposed to be? The budget portion of high end?

It's like buying a Benz if they made a version that was defined by being less of a status symbol.

What does iOS have at this point that Android doesn't?

I went from an iPhone to an Android earlier in the year and other than a few games, I really haven't found anything that didn't have an Android equivalent

This thing was never going to work at $750. That was flagship pricing up until last year, so no one is going to pay that much and not expect the very best. As someone said, if you're committed to spending $750, whats another couple hundred to get the XS?

What Apple should've done was update the SE (4.7" screen, Face ID, A10/A11) and sell it for $500.

It works the same in Canada which is why I'm asking. The 64 GB XR is $1029 straight up and $99.00 up front on a plan (so literally $38.75 of your bill per month is the phone) is why I didn't understand why it wouldn't be free in the US if there's that drastic of a price difference.

Most people who wanted the X already have it or the XS

The XR is good hardware but at that price point most people just sprung for the XS instead. Nobody was really waiting for this phone before they announced it
