The thing about bullet trains is that theyre always on rails.

But one extremely important category of devices will definitely not work: iOS does not support external storage. You can plug as many flash drives or hard drives as you want into the iPad Pros USB-C port, and nothing will happen. Apple says third parties can write apps to talk to external storage, but out of the box, this $1899 tablet simply wont talk to a flash drive.

The one thing iOS can do with external storage devices is import photos: if you plug in a camera or a memory card from a camera, iOS 12 will automatically pop open the camera import screen and let you import photos into your camera roll.

Thats it. That is the sole way iOS 12 can address external storage.

Oh, but it gets worse. I shoot photos in JPG+RAW, and the iOS PhotoKit API only allows apps to grab one or the other from the camera roll. So I could only import my RAW images into Lightroom, leaving the JPGs behind to clutter up my camera roll and iCloud storage. Thats untenable, so I just gave up and imported everything directly into Lightroom using my Mac, because my Mac doesnt insist on abstracting the filesystem away into nonsense.

This little Lightroom vignette is basically the story of the iPad Pro: either you have to understand the limitations of iOS so well you can make use of these little hacks all over the place to get things done, or you just deal with it and accept that you have to go back to a real computer from time to time because its just easier. And in that case, you might as well just use a real computer.

I dont think Im just stuck in some old way of thinking, or that I need to to spend more time inventing a new workflow out of Siri Shortcuts and glue. Its just basic stuff, like plugging in a flash drive to grab a file, or quickly changing the name of a document before emailing it off.

I dont think people should adapt to their computers. Computers should adapt to people.

The point is that an iPad isn't a Mac.

A Lambo and a Civic are both cars.

This is like comparing a gold plated Segway with a car.

Macs have pretty much the same hardware as PCs a quarter of their price.

The cars do not.

The point of the article is that Apple is claiming the iPad is superior to modern laptops due to faster how, but that comparison is meaningless if the iPad can't actually do anything nearly as well or as easily as a laptop.

The top of the line iPad Pro is nearly $2000, which yeah is a lot. But unless it's literally your replacement laptop, nobody needs a 1TB tablet.

i have been critical of apple products in the last few years but this might be the most unappealing apple product ive seen in recent memory.

i cannot figure out who this is marketed towards, feels like a toy computer you'd buy your kid so he can pretend to work at a desk next to his mom or dad's lol

These days I'd argue most people don't even need a 1TB PC.

I've always made a point of getting heaps of storage, but my latest machine has 128GB SDD + 1TB HDD and I'm barely using the latter; and still only have used up half the space on the former. Of course, that IS partly due to OneDrive having excellent selective-sync features; I used way more space before migrating from DropBox. (I know, "lol Microsoft", usually I'd say the same but OneDrive is actually really good.)

Not to mention completely arbitrary and absurd changes - like removing the headphone jack from a device seemingly designed for media creation and consumption.

I have no idea why I actively give myself headaches and frustrations to VOLUNTARILY run an Apple OS on unofficial hardware because the end product is just a really constraining OS.
