Moved to a different county since 2016, and you know what?

I was happy to do it. Thats how it should be, and furthermore, we should make an effort for everyone to have an ID paid for by the government, if need be

that would make IDs easier to get

ergo making it easier to vote

so good luck on getting the GOP to back something like that

That's cool, turns out they can also use a SSN to verify my identity as well though- that's assigned at birth and not as expensive as an ID.

Our county uses something called "eVIDs" (Electronic Voter IDentifiers) where you just swipe your license and go vote.

Dunno why that isn't a standard.

this would be a problem all it would take is for someone to memorize someone else's SSN. think that is why they require photo ID to prove it's them.

"privilege" even though I addressed that I understand not everyone can afford one, and came up with a solution.

We waste so much tax money on stupid bull crap; might as well use some for the poor to get an ID. Regular schmoes can and should buy their own - kinda like car insurance.

The GOP will never go for that. Like, there's a reason why there's been over 20 years of documented court cases of voter suppression efforts conducted by them. If they would actually engage in good faith you'd find a ton of people on the left willing to work with them with this, but how can that be possible when you have a long documented history of them obstructing and fighting the ability for all citizens to vote?

Hell, they barely even hide the fact that less people voting is better for them anymore.

this would help poor and minority groups vote.

so don't count on the GOP getting behind something like this

I have an ID. I'm not sure how it works in their system, but I definitely don't have to provide an ID here. Requiring ID varies by locality and state.

But you currently don't need an ID to vote unless you've moved or something?? I guess it depends on the area and state.

How about a singular bipartisan bill that covers free IDs and voter ID requirements? Seems like a win-win that would expose their real agenda if they voted against it.

Tbh I wouldn't trust the GOP not to load up their part of the bill with a bunch of little tricks.

Basically they can't really be trusted to act or negotiate in good faith

I'd be all for an actual solution to this and making it easier for people to vote, but we have seen for decades now that the GOP doesn't act in good faith when it comes to this and wants to restrict and limit the vote as much as possible because they know that the more people that vote results in them losing.

Now that I think about it more, in order to register to vote you have to be doing a number of set things like applying for a social program or registering a vehicle/getting a license etc which all require proof of residence. In addition to this even if you managed to get my SSN and do all of this you would still have to chill at my house and check my mail before I did daily to grab the ballot...

Technically a Social Security Card is what is required to prove citizenship, those are issued at birth or upon becoming a citizen.

Beyond that you can get an ID for the individual state in which you reside. This ID usually costs an additional fee even if it is not for driving. It's customary for people to get a state ID before or at the age of 18.

Voter id aint a bad idea. But when you hear the nonsense of dmvs being open only for work hours and like two days a week in demographically minority areas, that isnt cool and its very apparent that a certain group of people dont want another group of people to vote.

i would be ok with this as a prerequisite for voter ID laws. perhaps we should pay for everyone to have a passport.

i am not ok with voter ID laws that precede this, as they disenfranchise poor, real voters.

Because it's, quite frankly, just something that doesn't happen with any sort of regularity to be an issue.

I was asked for an ID when I voted since I moved. Though my voters registration card I got in the mail said this would also work in lieu of ID if someone didn't have it.

That seems to be a common sense way to deal with it.
