First Muslim women elected to congress, democrats won huge in the house and barely lost anything in the senate, and as far as I've seen no truly awful laws were passed.

Not a bad night although there were a few results that, while not unexpected, were pretty embarrassing for our country:

Criminally indicted congressman Duncan Hunter was sent back to the House to enjoy a one last hurrah before heading off to prison.

Gianforte-- celebrated for assaulting a member of the press-- easily won reelection.

Unabashed racist and white supremacist Steve King will hold on to power.

Brian Kemp nakedly stole his election (assuming he avoids the runoff).

Religion and politics should be separated as faaaaaar as possible, it doesn't bode well that people are celebrating a Muslim being elected rather than the person she is regarding her political stances.

GOP lost their supermajority in both the NC house and senate. Which means they cant block the governors vetos anymore, which is a pretty wonderful victory for us considering how blatantly theyve worked to neuter that office. God, theyre awful here. Like a virus.

I think it's more indicative that racism/fear has lost and more people do care about her stances and less about her religion

I'm actually cool with it. Republicans still have the power but there is a slight bit of checks and balance in the rare chance we need it. Hopefully this doesn't lead to any obstruction Bs.

I don't think we should elect someone because of religion or race, but it's fine to celebrate if it does happen, because more diversity is a good thing.

Diversity for diversity's sake is a fallacy of the new age left.

If this situation was turned around, and a hardcore Muslim man was elected who would do everything in his power to limit rights for women, would you praise his election for meeting some imaginary diversity quota?

One of the representatives elected in Virginia is a bigfoot hunter who was planning to write a book titled The Mating Habits of Bigfoot and Why Women Want Him. When people brought this up he claimed it was a joke of some kind and then set all his social media stuff to private

I mean that's what most of the evangelicals currently in Congress are for and large portions of the country praise them for it. You're not really making a compelling argument.

diversity is good, but it can be a pretty hollow victory

to use an example from Canada: in the last federal election, there were a bunch of first nations MPs elected. I assume most of them are still in office. meanwhile, the prime minister has approved a pipeline across indigenous land, and there are still reserves that don't have clean drinking water.

it's also perfectly possible for an individual member of a marginalized group to work against the interests of that group if it benefits them personally
