The first Character Battle didn't have a formal nomination system. CJayC apparently just took suggestions from the Current Events board. From there, he just picked the characters to be in the bracket. That's about all we know about how characters were selected.

The bigger question is why Ceej left out Yoshi but put in the other seven Smash Bros originals

Also got them all right but the Gordon match almost tripped me up just because of how ridiculous it is

You know what match in 2002 sort of blows my mind? Tidus/Claire. It's like, one of the only first-round matches that seems like it could actually happen in 2018, and yet I don't have any memory of it. It's like one of the least memorable matches of the first round.

I think there was supposed to be something weird about that match, too...like the poll was down awhile or something.

I think the poll was actually down for Sonic vs. Tidus later in the bracket, which caused Claire to rank #13 in the xstats. But thanks to Tidus being put against other frauds the next few years, that didn't come crashing down until 2005.

I can do this very easily.

Now, ranking all three or four characters in each match in 2007/2008/2009/2013... THAT'S something I might struggle with.

Tidus/Claire was the match which decided who had the only perfect R1.

Starting around Knuckles Vs. Akira, Ceej would post on the board every day with a list of who still had a perfect bracket, and after Strider Vs. Raziel there were only two people left. They split on Tidus/Claire, and the rest of R1 was considered easy to predict (Sam/Driller was considered the closest match left), so it was assumed that whoever got the match right would be the last perfect remaining and get a perfect R1. Kind of hyped up at the time, lol.

I believe RPGFan95 or something like that was the one who got it right, and he remained perfect until Alucard/Duke.

I don't remember what my 2002 bracket looked like but I'm pretty sure I made some terrible mistakes because I assumed the seeding actually had merit? I was really only a Nintendo kid and 2002 was still early in the days of internet and I hadn't really familiarized myself with a lot of the more obscure characters in the bracket so a lot of them I assumed were characters that were really popular and I just assumed I didn't know better. This is basically the opposite effect of the Dunning-Kruger syndrome - I felt that I didn't know anything when in fact I actually knew everything I needed to know. Hell I think I might have picked Serious Sam over Mega Man just because I loved Mega Man and I couldn't really believe that he could pull this upset over the 3 seed who was a character from a game I'd heard was pretty good. Haha jesus what an idiot

Was really surprised tbh, i've never been eligible for a prize so have never done anything other than a favs bracket
What helped a lot was the sporcle game that was posted here last week or so about characters who have never won a match in these things, I probably would've went with Guybrush and Abe if i hadn't distinctly remembered them being included in that quiz.

And wait til they hear who the President is when all that goes down

This is like, the entire list of R1 matchups that don't look really fucking weird in 2018:

Spyro/Morrigan
Alucard/Tails
Cloud/Fox
Crono/Simon
Snake/Squall
Jill/Kirby
Link/Little Mac
Tidus/Claire
Samus/Ken

Of these, Alucard/Tails, Jill/Kirby, and Cloud/Fox are only R2 at earliest, and Snake/Squall is R3 at earliest. Spyro/Morrigan is already a bit of a stretch to call not-weird, but it somehow happened in round 2 of 2013, so ok I guess??? Crono/Simon, Link/Little Mac, Tidus/Claire, and Samus/Ken are to me the only matchups that wouldn't make me blink if they happened in R1 in 2018 (assuming of course that the legends division wasn't a thing).

I could see Kirby/Jill in R1 in 2018. It'd go the other way now, of course. As would Alucard > Kirby 2003.

I was too late to fill out a bracket that year, but with the extremely little knowledge I had of almost every non-Nintendo character in the bracket (I would have had such atrocities as Fox > Cloud and Crash > Sephiroth had I filled one out), I expected a Mario > Link final very early, but as the contest went on it became apparent to me that it would be Link > Mario.
