I think the answer to both "Are we alone" and "Will we make contact with extraterrestrial species any time soon" is "no".

If we're lucky, we might find solid proof of their existance, but I think it'll be a long time - if ever - before any contact.

it's incredibly unlikely that intelligent life occurred elsewhere tbh

Intelligent life? I don't know, I doubt it. Any kind of life? Absolutely.

It's not that unlikely. While nothing is quite on the same level as humans, there are plenty of other species on Earth that are nonetheless very intelligent, and diverged from humans a very long time ago - parrots (especially African Greys, Amazons and Eclectuses) and dolphins being two of the most obvious examples. While there are definitely a lot of very successful species that have little intelligence, it also seems that there's enough of an evolutionary advantage to intelligence that it will arise independently like that.

With that in mind, I'd figure that unless there's no other life out there at all, there's probably other intelligent life.

I dunno but in terms we can understand, another galaxy is basically another universe, so can you really confidently say theres only one planet with life in a whole other universe.

So we're not literally alone but yeah we're alone.

Our galaxy alone has over one hundred billion stars, and our galaxy is just one out of millions of galaxies in the known universe. With those kinds of odds, I'm fairly certain that some form of life, be it sapient or microbial, exists beyond our own planet.

I highly doubt it, to me the issue is more "will we be able to reach them and communicate at all". I mean it takes like what 5 months at least just to get to mars and like 4 minutes for radio comms to reach from earth to mars? Any life we find is gonna be waaaaay farther than that and figuring out how to reach them in a reasonable amount of time is going to be the main issue, otherwise you gotta go on a one-way mission on like a self sustaining space colony to get there (and even then it'll be the descendants of those people that'll be there and not the original space people either)

I'd hope we're not alone in the universe, because that would be very disappointing.

If radio comms were to take a few days, or even a week or two, that's good enough to at least make communication contact - even if physical contact is out of the question.

At a range of two lightweeks is the inner Oort cloud, a very cold and dark region of space with dust and icy rocks. An unlikely habitat for life, I'm afraid. The closest star, however, is a whopping four light years away. Sending a message there and then waiting for a potential reply will take eight years. To get a better scale of distance, our outermost planet, Neptune, is a mere 4 lighthours away, but it took 12 years for Voyager 2 to reach it.

Even eight years round-trip would still be possible, over the long term, for communication to occur.

Don't get me wrong - I don't at all think it's likely. I'm just not convinced it's outright impossible.
