Plus, you can actually resell them, which is much nicer than the many many dodgy consumable microtransactions out there. Try to realize, these are companies trying to make money with their product. A product whose retail price has been the same since the 1990s. All that time the cost of making these games has gone up. So, yeah, most games these days have various ways you can spend more money on them if you want to, but it's very rarely a necessity.
