In the most broadest definition possible, you convince someone of falsehoods by repeatedly lying to them, or denying that what they are telling you is the truth when it actually is.

This is most commonly brought up in the context of abusive relationships due to how the abusive partner manages to con their way through it.

I'd have never done that while sober/I'll never do it again/you hit me first/etc

Yeah, it's very much like having your mind broken by hentai. Once you had standards and would never have allowed such low quality filth to eat up your time let alone scintillate you. You were a man of taste and good breeding. But you slipped and hentai's creeping influence has poisoned your memories. You forgave shitty animation and derivative plots propped up by even less original characters, because surely it wasn't all like this. But then you stopped noticing the sound design beyond the mostly awful voice acting work, which you also handwaved.

Now you can no longer remember a time when your taste wasn't trash. You've fallen to base hedonism and turpitude. You'll accept anything anime gives you because you've forgotten what it means to love oneself. The process by which hentai destroyed everything that mattered to you, is gaslighting.

It's when you're a pathological liar towards someone - to the point that they believe your lies to be true. You then deny ever lying and say the situation was completely the opposite.

It's basically super fucked up and almost psychotic reverse psychology.

That's gaslighting on a large scale, but it works just as well on the personal level. Just boldly and persistently telling a lie in the face of the truth in an attempt to make the victim question their own legitimacy or understanding of something.

The term comes from a movie where a guy made his wife think she was crazy in part by dimming a gas light and telling her "no, the light is exactly the same".

He'd do things, lie about them, turn issues around and play all kinds of head games to make his wife think what was actually happening was not and what hadn't happened did.
