For years, my job has had a problem with VPN tunnels to remote sites dropping randomly. We could never really narrow down the problem until recently.

At first, all the remote locations only had Spectrum cable modems for internet service. We also had a Spectrum cable modem at the old corporate office that was used as a secondary internet service.

We moved to a new corporate office last year, but we now only have fiber circuits at the corporate office. Then we got Google Fiber at one of our locations. The VPN tunnel between our corporate office and that location stopped dropping. Then we opened a Canada office, and our VPN tunnel there doesn't drop. told us it was likely something going on in Spectrum's network.

I started hounding them, having them dispatch multiple times. On the 6th dispatch, the Spectrum tech told us that their coax infrastructure was oversubscribed. It was a large project they were working on to migrate customers to fiber in order to remove some utilization. They said it'd be better by the end of the year and I think we may now be at that point.

Our VPN tunnels haven't dropped since the 31st. This is a good sign.
