Surprised they've lasted this long, honestly.

They were our number one source for in-game leaks though

I've bought tons of them even if others consider them antiquated. Of course I don't carry a smart phone or tablet with me all the time; so that makes a difference. Also I've found that the books had more info in them than the online guides for some games (I'm talking about you, Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon).

My favorite parts were the character, enemy, and weapon and item pages. Loved seeing character art especially, and getting some added lore and back story.

I remember working for blockbuster in like 2008 and being told on a corporate call that we needed to push sales of strategy guides

Upper management was not happy when I asked why someone would buy one when better information was available for free online. They told that the strategy guides were more trustworthy since they were official

I probably have a dozen or so of them, but most of them I didn't buy new. The resale value on them is so bad that you can usually pick up a used strategy guide for really cheap. Think I payed about $2 each for my RE3 and RE C:V ones. I'll admit as guides though, they kind of suck. Half the time they aren't comprehensive enough, and the rest of the time they don't offer you much of anything special you can't find online outside of some cool artwork. Still, it is pretty nostalgic to have one sitting on your lap while playing a game.

I think maybe with the older ones. But the newer ones, from Prima, had a free code on the back after buying that you could use to get the online version free. For PC or tablet. And I believe those were updated. For like DLC and stuff. I think...

Ones for RPG's tend to go up in value with time. I have a bunch from the 90's & 2000's worth $100+ each.

I pretty much never used those. I think some of my friends bought them on rare occasions, but even back in like the late 90s/early 00s, the internet was a better resource. It wasn't as convenient as pulling something up on a smartphone, but we'd just print FAQs out ahead of time if we thought we'd use them

I do find them enjoyable as almost collectibles and bathroom reading material. I have one for World of Warcraft and it's fun to reason a guide written for the 2004 or 2005 era of WoW.
