I once turned my DS off right after GTA Chinatown Wars started autosaving. It would only take half a second to autosave and I happened to catch it at the wrong moment. The file was completely screwed. I loved that game and had put lots of time into it, but never touched it again.

It's so potentially dangerous. I feel like if they're going to add it and there's a chance you'll lose your game if you turn off in the middle, it should tell you when it's about to autosave so you can't mess it all up.

It's not as likely to happen now that you tend not to turn off your system much now (sleep mode) and even when you do turn your system off it's not as easy and quick as it was on DS or game boys

Has anybody else here ever had this problem?

That might explain it. If the developers are smart, they'll keep an extra autosave even if they don't show it to the player, just in case. Unfortunately Rockstar wasn't that prescient.
