Just watched Yokai Watch Shadowside ep.8 after putting it off for a while. My favorite episode so far for the abaurd scenario and comedy cues, and theres also the re-introduction of a Yokai I really liked from the original series, Robonyan (Not the same individual though), with an awesome redesign.

And I also just got YW2 Psychic Specters today. This version lets you choose between the Bony and Fleshy versions stories and encounter pool (indicated by which brand of doughnuts you buy during the tutorial), which is nice.

Jibanyan also got promoted to a main character now, as opposed to a one-off in the first game. Thanks to his popularity from the anime, I bet. Hes got a pretty nice dynamic with Whisper, and is a bit more animated in cutscenes compared to other people. Feels similar to the Monster Hunter World Palico in this regard.

Speaking of the doughnuts, thats actually what they localized manju as. The first game also localized takoyaki as doughnut holes, so I guess its a series trend going forward now...

Konosuba, definitely Konosuba.

If you're fine with just general "pulled into and stuck in a fantasy world" isekai anime and it doesn't necessarily have to be a video game, then I'll also mention No Game No Life.

That's not even true, and you know it.
That Time I Was Reincarnated as a Slime is getting really good reviews and praise, Konosuba is legitimately one of the funniest things you will ever see, Re:Zero is absolutely phenomenal, as well as some others that are not immediately coming to mind.

Tanya isn't really that great. It's good, but I expected it to be more ruthless and blatant in its nazisms rather than the odd pussyfooting, semi-unamibitious warmongering in a war without immediately obvious benefits and goals. It could've been a story about how a person's willingness to prove god wrong goes as so far as to be a major contributor in the Nazis winning the war and showing all the nitty gritty suffering that comes as a byproduct of the ruthlessness, but it doesn't. And Tanya herself also frequently loses (or forgets? or the author forgets?) the personality of her previous self, who was supposed to be this cold, emotionless, ambitious businessman who didn't let anything stand in his way.

So it fails as an isekai and fails as a precursor to a dystopia in a world not unlike ours.

Meanwhile the gold standard for isekai is just Mushoku Tensei and that's about it (though while it doesn't really matter, it's technically in the tensei genre because the character is reborn rather than sent to another world as is). But I've raved about Mushoku Tensei enough times, and it's a long ass series with a pretty lukewarm beginning. But the setup of the world during his childhood is incredibly relevant to the emotionally gripping and very enlightening story of Rudeus' life as a whole. If anybody has the will to read it through, I feel as though I won't find many people who disagree that it's the greatest isekai ever written. I've not read many isekais I found genuinely good otherwise, though there are plenty that are far more interesting and entertaining than the anime "meta" for isekais.

Like Konjiki no Moji Tsukai is interesting, though it's a straight up adventure story more than anything. The main character's quirks and his propensity for warming up to people he supposedly finds annoying is a great aspect of the story. Also his powers are super interesting and not excessively overpowered, so it can read like a Hunter x Hunter type of shounen but is more often a human vs monster than human vs human, though I think that changes depending on the arc.

Arifureta is something that I honestly think is one of the most entertaining LNs I've read in my life. It starts out super strong then is super weak then is super strong when it gets to the revenge porn stuff. It doesn't give much shit about themes or teaching lessons. It's just an excessively chuuni series about a guy who tears a surprisingly well-establish world a new one. Sadly it's not like it's flawless. Every time I read back on it, I realize just how many parts are just... lol not good. Like do they have to spend every few paragraphs in a new city about all the guys gawking at Hajime's harem? I feel like everybody understood after the first town. White Fox, which is doing the Gob Slayer anime, is gonna do the anime for this one. It looked like a train wreck and was gonna release this year but they decided against it and the previews for it looks hell a lot better now.

Shieldbro is an obvious pick. I don't think Shieldbro is perfect. The rage Naofumi feels for being betrayed and tossed aside is ultimately not well-established enough that the later explanations kinda feel like a cop-out. Maybe the LN fixes this but the reveal of the true reason was too far from the rage we see Naofumi build up throughout the series. Because ultimately, he gets everything that he wants and gets all the revenge that he wants, so why is he still keeping up that attitude? Also the fact that this is a lampshade of other isekais come waaaay too late and is the most entertaining part of the series. The anime will definitely not cover this aspect of the series, but also getting to it means enduring the incredibly mundane village raising parts

Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? is also a good one and will get an anime pretty soon as well. It's about a girl who turns into a spider in a new world and has to survive against a bunch of big monsters. So it's pretty similar to Arifureta but Arifureta makes the survival part out to be a lot more gritty. The main character of Kumo Desu Ga is a lot more jokey and lighthearted. While survival is a goal of hers, it never feels like she cares either way, compared to Hajime of Arifureta who constantly talks about just wanting to go back home but is trapped between a rock and a hard place. Also not everything in Kumo Desu Ga is as it seems, and I sadly read the later revelations and don't really know what to think about it other than "what was the point of all that?"

Goodbye Isekai Tensei is an interesting one. A would-be hero in Japan is asked by a beautiful princess to be reborn into another world. But to do that, she wants to murder him, and a bunch of demons appear to stop her. So it ends up being a series about doing everything they can to stop the actual isekai from happening. I dunno if this one's very good

Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo Dorei Majutsu recently had an anime. I think it deserves a second season for just how goddamn great that adaptation was. I didn't think much of the series, but after the anime, I noticed a lot of the good parts of the series being more accentuated, and I'm not talking about the melons. It's the fact that the main character's characterization is surprisingly really deep. He's cripplingly anti-social, but his new body almost acts like a mask through which he peers through the world ala the camera obscura. He's inherently a good person, so he uses his excessive powers to try to not get anybody killed if possible. But he can't get as far in life as he could off the bat because of his social anxiety and his demon lord act. So his 2 slave girls basically end up acting like a catalyst to create more meaningful relationships with others as well as with each other. If they weren't in the story, then you would've seen a very lonely story about a strong guy without aim. A better series than I think most people might perceive it, even perhaps by the author and the story themselves.

Of course I made a lot of commentary already on Japan's dangerously lax perspective on slavery and servitude. One should not read these with in mind the fact that it's acceptable in any way.

Gonna hold off on buying the Spyro Trilogy immediately like I did the Crash Trilogy. Want to see reviews and people look into the game's mechanics. I wish I did with Crash. I 100% all 3 Crash games when I was younger, but I am absolutely terrible at the remastered trilogy. I suspect it's a combination of not being as good at these kind of games these days and the change to Crash's collision box that I heard about.

Yeah I remembered some time after my post but didn't bother fixing it because I thought everybody just skimmed my long posts as usual. But it doesn't make any of my points less true. And it being based on WWI weakens the story and is still pussyfooting like I said. And it's still a heavily flawed and backbone-less series where the concept of it being an isekai barely matters. Him being a little girl also has 0 relevance to the story and says a lot about the author's mindset when writing this. People make this series out to be way better than it actually is just because it's different and has a pretense of being about ruthlessness

the series is nicknamed "tales of Tanya the misunderstood" amongst the fan. the ruthlessness, or should i call "edginess" is not the main charm.
it's just an old anime/manga cliche that the main character being misunderstood by the people around him/her and they think the mc is more badass than s/he actually is.

Might have to check it out. In terms of SAO, Log Horizon is SAO done well, though it's not immediately obvious. SAO is written by a guy who's played 5 hours of MMO in his life and was frustrated by how he wasn't special from every other people playing it. Log Horizon is written by a guy who's reached post-game and global rankings on some PvP/PvE content in a well renowned MMO that like an entire server would know the name of, and he decided to write a logical and interesting isekai based off his experience.

It actually has themes like dealing with immortality or how to behave as a society amongst a world of objective inferior beings or how to bring an unorganized and unmotivated society together. Also the main character's meticulous unraveling of their new world is quite well done. When he discovers something for the first time, it never feels as though it's because the world itself has lowered its standards to make the main character look good, like in SAO. It's more because the main character is just a really level headed guy who is capable of eventually figuring these things out for the benefit of society. So yeah it's a pretty mature and well written series, by the guy who did Maoyuu Yuusha, aka Econ 101 for anime fans

You're saying a lot of things that also has absolutely nothing to do with all that I wrote about it. In fact, I literally refute those things in the very first post I made. Tanya's premise COULD have been something that's "edgy" or at the very least an interesting exploration of an alternate history brought on by a sudden great power that didn't exist in our history. But it's pretty obvious later on with all of its misunderstanding gags and Tanya's inconsistent personality and uncharacteristically unambitious actions despite starting the story with wanting to freaking prove god wrong that the author simply lost track of his own series.

Like just think about it. It doesn't matter if I confused it being based on which war or whether or not Tanya is or isn't a badass because I already established it in my posts lol. What matters is that despite who Tanya really is, the series is a mess of unexplored potential and a lack of ambition in both the writing and its characters. If you're not gonna make it about facing the war head on to disprove god's judgment upon him, why even write the story like this in the first place? Why even start the story as an isekai or even establish who he was in his previous life? None of it matters after like the first arc.

Would the story be any different if a genius girl with 0 ambitions made her way into the army for a magical WWI and did everything that happened in Youjo Senki? Absolutely not. But at least in that case, you wouldn't have to worry about writing a story that's aimed to have Germany win it in the end
