You don't know for sure he's dead. It's purposely ambiguous for a sequel. I say let's do it. They pull him back in one more time.

there were talks back in the day about a sequel/reboot starring Leonardo DiCaprio, iirc

from 1999

https://www.theguardian.com/film/1999/jun/22/news

Leonardo DiCaprio and Andy Garcia (pictured, left) and are set to star in the fourth instalment of The Godfather.

The story line is still being discussed by the writer Mario Puzo and director Francis Ford Coppola, but it is understood that the sequel will be structured in the same way as the superior Godfather II, which told two stories through a series of flashbacks. One possibility is that DiCaprio will play the young Sonny Corleone (portrayed originally by James Caan in The Godfather) in one story, and Garcia play his son in the other story.

Mario Puzo died. The plan was to show the rise and fall of the Corleone Family. Vincent was supposed to get the family into the drug racket and in the end was going to die in a shootout with the cops sort of like Pablo Escobar if I remember correctly. I want to say Coppola explained it in the commentary track of Part III.

Kind of a shame, cause it may could have redeemed the series from 3, which had some good ideas, but overall bad execution.

Sonny was my favorite character in the trilogy. I'm one of the few who thinks he would have done a better job than Micheal. What happened to Fredo wouldn't have happened, that's for sure.

Sonny never would have done a better job. The whole point is to show that Mike was the only one capable, and then to show that running the family destroyed him.

Pt4 was in the works, but with the death of Puzo, was shelved. It was supposed to cover Vincent running the family and everything going to shit.

I haven't read the book so I can't comment on that, but people certainly were afraid of him. Maybe not "fear" in Michael's sense, but people were certainly afraid of him.

Sonny was too hot headed. If Vito died and he took control he would have kept fighting all of the other 4 families and the Corleones would have eventually been wiped out. With all the violence going on the family would have lost a lot if not all of the political protection/contacts/influence which was integral to the Corleone empire. And ultimately, the families being constantly at war interferes with business. Even Vito himself says to Tom Hagan: "Tom, I advised Michael. I never thought you were a bad consigliere. I thought Santino was a bad Don, rest in peace." It was also Sonny's big mouth that got the Corleones in that war in the first place.

He was a ferocious fighter and leader during war time, but not as a Don. With a cooler head strategizing and planning, he was perfect. If he had lived, with Michael as the Don the Corleone family would be unstoppable.

The book explains it more. If you like the movie it's worth checking out. There's a couple parts that you can skip though.

I haven't read the book so I can't comment on that, but people certainly were afraid of him. Maybe not "fear" in Michael's sense, but people were certainly afraid of him.

ill give you an example:

in the movie, when sonny finds out that carlo rizzi beat up connie, he rushes over to carlo's place & beats the shit out of him (that scene with the fire hydrant). at the end sonny says something like this to carlo: "if you ever lay a finger on connie again, I'll kill you."

in the book, there's an analysis of this line and why it was really bad for sonny to say it. basically, from this exchange, carlo learns that sonny can't actually kill him, because if he did have the ability to kill him he would have already done it. this allows carlo to set up sonny to be murdered later on.

the book explains that the godfather never makes threats, because they're ultimately an empty & weak move. you'll notice michael never makes threats to anyone, he does what he says & is a man of action. this is one of the ways vito/michael maintains power, because people know he is never all talk. people were maybe afraid of sonny in the physical sense, but never as a leader

It happens apparently, a weird realistic detail Puzo added.

And during the restaurant scene with Michael, Sollozzo, and Captain McClusky, Mike has to take a shit after retrieving the hidden gun. I guess due to nerves.

The book has some kinda out there stuff in it, but it's still a good read. You also get some backstory of the early Corleone years that part II didn't cover and we find out why Luca Brasi is so important and how deadly and sadistic he really was.

She didn't get it because of Sonny. She was born that way. Sonny was the only guy with the wedding tackle required to satisfy her.
