Does it taste so good that they eat it again? Imagine how much money you save from buying kibble.

There can be different reasons why. It might indicate a health issue, you might just need to train them out of it, or they might just be idiots: https://www.petmd.com/dog/puppycenter/health/evr_dg_why_do_puppies_eat_poop

It's mostly the highly food-driven breeds like labs and golden retrievers that do that. They basically will put anything in their mouth. It makes them easy to train combined with their eagerness to please, but actually they're pretty dumb tbh (albeit two of America's most popular breeds).

Retrievers are like top 5 in breed intelligence.

Only by people who miscategorize trainability as intelligence. For some reason in dogs there is an insistence that biddability and trainability equal intelligence. That's not how we measure intelligence in humans and it shouldn't be in dogs, either.

Labs are not very smart, but they are eager to please and easy to train thanks to their high food drive. For these reasons they can be good guide dogs for the disabled.

What metric do you use then?

I don't think there is really a good metric for it right now. We should just admit we don't have a good way of measuring it. Measuring intelligence is really hard to do even in humans, and we still arguably don't have it down.

These lists that claim "most intelligent breeds" are still useful, but they should be described instead as "most biddable breeds," which is more accurate and useful to know.
