Ive always hated coriander. When I drank beer, they used to add it to beers I liked and it 100% ruined it every time. Same with food. Its just too overpowering.

a few of my friends say the same thing

i went out to lunch with my colleague the other day and he said that it's a genetic thing that coriander tastes like soap to some people. i'm not sure if i believe him, but i've never thought that it tastes like soap, whereas people find the 'soapiness' unbearable

This is what I've read, too.

I've never heard that cilantro tastes like soap. I love chopping up some fresh cilantro and sprinkling it on dishes.

Something we can actually agree on. I mean, it's purely genetics, but still, it's nice to see you post something and think "this is both a good post and a southcoast post" once in a while.

According to wikipedia, the stuff has some chemical or chemicals in the aldehyde family that some people at genetically resistant to while others are sensitive. It basically tastes like non-toxic embalming fluid unless you're genetically resistant to the chemical(s), in which case, you taste other flavors that are completely buried and undetectable to people like us. It's also more smell-based than taste is normally. If I pinch my nostrils completely and bite into a sprig of it, and only release them like 10 seconds after I've swallowed all of it, I can't actually taste anything at all... and dried coriander is literally flavorless to me (apparently the flavor fades as it loses freshness)

It's 100% true, though to me, it reminds me more of a combination of cleaning chemicals and mold, not soap specifically. Highly unpleasant though.
