He's easily the strongest and most consistent horror director of the 21st century. John Carpenter is overrated. I'd put him below Wes Craven. He also gets points for In the Mouth of Madness. Saw it as a kid and it had quite an effect on me (not like in a traumatic way. The Thing alone makes him one of the greats, let alone all the other things he's done for the horror genre. James Wan and Mike Flanagan are quickly making names for themselves as modern horror icons though. Give it another decade or so, and assuming they don't divebomb their careers like M.
