Good list, and I honestly can't decide. I ended up picking Carpenter though. Although I could easily have went with Craven, Hitchcock or Hooper.

I'm really liking the direction Flanagan seems to be going in, but i wouldn't say he's the greatest.

Not sure who i would choose actually.

This is difficult. I'ma have to give it to Wes Craven out of the poll options. Sam Raimi is my favorite, though.

After Conjuring 2 (among everything else he's done) I would consider James Wan a serious modern contender. He's easily the strongest and most consistent horror director of the 21st century.

John Carpenter is overrated. I'd put him below Wes Craven.

James Wan hits some really high highs but also has some really low lows. Dead Silence being an example of a bottom of the barrel shit movie.

Tough choice, but picked Carpenter. The Thing was amazing. That defibralator scene was my favorite 2-3 seconds of any horror film. He also gets points for In the Mouth of Madness. Saw it as a kid and it had quite an effect on me (not like in a traumatic way. I did have a few movies/shows that did, but in this case, it was just in a mind-fuck way)

John Carpenter's best movies weren't even horror.

I voted Friedkin just on the strength of The Exorcist. The only thing that comes close for me is Jacob's Ladder.

Yeah, Killer Joe isn't exactly horror but it is intense as hell. The only other Friedkin horror film I can think of is Bug, which was good but not great.

This is objectively wrong. Hell, his three best movies are among the best lovecraftian horror movies ever made.

Also surprised at the lack of David Cronenberg as a poll option.

Totally slipped my mind. I always thought Videodrome was underrated.

Ooh, good list. I'd also put Del Toro and Danny Boyle up for consideration.

Overall, I think I have to give it to Carpenter. The Thing alone makes him one of the greats, let alone all the other things he's done for the horror genre.

James Wan and Mike Flanagan are quickly making names for themselves as modern horror icons though. Give it another decade or so, and assuming they don't divebomb their careers like M. Night Shyamalan did, they'll be considered all time horror greats.

Yeah, Flanagan has been on a good streak so far. Looking forward to seeing what he does in the future.

James Wan needs to get back in The Conjuring universe. I couldnt make it 20 minutes into The Nun because it was so boring.

He's still a little too new for him to really be a contender, but he's on a damn good path to become an all time great.
