Only play 1 if you really want to see the full story. There's nothing that 1 does that isn't done much better in 2.

Also, the Pre-Sequel (basically a 1.5 in terms of story) is worth playing after you play 2.

I'd agree with this. There's some minor mechanics things that were better in 1 but 2 is much much better. I really liked Pre-Sequel, but YMMV.

You can jump right to 2; the only thing of note from Borderlands 1's story is that there is now a resource known as Eridium all over the planet thanks to the main characters from Borderlands 1 and the main villains are trying to control it.

I'd probably just start with 2. the first one was fun at the time but they made a LOT of changes in 2 that made gameplay better

imo i would start with 1. pick whichever character you like best. 4 different playstyles (zerker or the sargeant guy is pretty good with his special).

might be talking about 2nd game though.

If you play 1, i wouldn't recommend successive replays. Just get the gist of the story and the characters, finish the game and maybe the DLCs, then jump to 2.

IMO the playable characters are so much better in 2, and the grind of multiple NG+ modes per character isn't anywhere near as bad, though soloing it can still get tedious.

And that's if you don't just jump to the Pre-Sequel after 2.

It's a pet peeve of mine in the Borderlands games that you have to unlock each new Vault Hunter mode separately for each character. So gods help you if you're like me and find it hard to stick to a single main, because 3+ playthroughs each for 6 different characters may severely test your patience.

TVH and UVH wouldn't work on a first playthrough on a character anyway. you'd have no slag weapons

Ech, I think 1 deserves at least one playthrough. I really love it and I feel like you kinda need the setup of at least the gist of the story and the intro of a few characters for them to really have impact when you play 2.

And if you've got someone for couch co-op, it'll make it all even better.

I like 1 a lot more tbh

The deadpan writing, sparse workds and music, and its actually playable solo; 2 is basically impossible to not groan at all these years later because the writing was dated at release, and the gameplay placed a HUGE emphasis on raid bosses and the goddamned fucking community chest or whatever they called it. Still very enjoyable, but imo 1 had a much more unique tone and feel and the gameplay holds up a good deal better.

Id play one first because its more of a pain to go from 2 to 1 than 1 to 2. If you decide to play both eventually I mean.

Also Ill def agree the classes are way more interesting in 2, however aside from a couple of the exceedingly specialized skill trees, they feel far more similar than the original 4 did.

I'd definitely start with 1, it's funny, a lot of good characters and amusing missions, and it's a strong introduction to 2 that if you are a fan by the end of 1, you'll appreciate the sequel a lot more and have more fun with it.

If you are going for DLC also, Zombie Island for BL1 is one of the best DLC purchases I have ever made, it was outstanding and shouldn't be missed.

You can spend time in MP games with friends and easily find yourself far overlevelled and overequipped for that character's singleplayer campaign.

Sadly, you still have to go through the story at that difficulty, and maybe even at the next one up, before you start to find enemies challenging again.

Sure it's nice having a UVHM-ready Gaige blitzing through two playthroughs like a god gone mad, but it It would be nice to just skip that if another of your characters had already done the hard work.
