I think I'm actually over leveled since I've fought every enemy I have ran into and escaped twice before entering this area. Most bosses I have beaten with little difficulty. (2 gave me trouble early on)

I get in this area and I'm getting curve stomped! Not by a boss... JUST THE GENERAL ENEMIES! I figured it's because I'm using auto battle. I typically set my auto battle up slightly different for each area and it works fine. This time I turn it off and fight each battle myself. I STILL GET STOMPED! My win percent in general fights here is like 60%! Is there a secret here I'm missing?! If I can't handle the basic enemies here, do I have hope against the boss?!

are you playing steam or 2d?

if 2d git gud

if 3d make sure there aren't any augments that you have and could be using, but aren't.

It's 3D. I've heard about Dual Cast but I don't have that. I'm sure I'm missing many more. I guess I need to look this up

yeah 3D ff4 is kind of a guide dang it in itself, since you need to follow an augment guide if you want to minmax

in terms of not minmaxing though, make sure you've picked up the poison axe and defender. i'm pretty sure they're both in the underground lair of the summons, but double check that.

the reason for this is that most enemies in the lunar subterrane have innate holy resist. if you're using excalibur/ragnarok and wondering why cecil is hitting for 1-2k tops, that's most likely why

Even with cruddy augments there's still some scripting stuff for fights against enemies you can use there. Especially against the bosses who guard chests and items.

Not gonna lie, it's better to just use Edge's smoke or Rosa's teleport to escape from all random encounters when the song "inside the giant" starts playing and the area turns to glass tiles. Several enemies there can be utter bs and only worth killing if you're farming for like 2% drop items that are only really necessary for the strongest two (version exclusive) bosses.

Holy crap I know so little about this game! The augment guide blew me away and practically wants to make me start over. You guys are also naming off weapons I don't have. Excalibur? Ragnarok? My Cecil is only using Lustrous Sword. The Dwarven Axe actually hits harder overall. I think I missed so much stuff the more I talk to you guys.

Lustrous sword?!

No wonder you're getting your ass kicked, it's low attack AND holy element. Go get defender and poison axe asap, and then check up on your armor too. There's a set of genji gear in the lair of the father that cecil, kain, and edge can use (though beware there are forced behemoth encounters in there), and the dragon gear is obtainable pretty early on in the lunar subterrane for cecil and kain that will give them resistance to Fire, Ice, and Thunder, helping deal with the sorceror enemies. Edge's black garb is also in the lunar subterrane, and I believe it's on the first floor.

If you want more magical power out of Rosa/Rydia make sure you're using staff or rod type weapons, as those generally provide boosts to spirit or intellect, the stat that boosts those kind of magic.

In addition to that, after level 70, your stat gains are determined by the augments you have equipped. I'm not sure if you got the cry augment but if you did then you can give that to either Kain or Edge (I like it on Edge personally) and that will help your damage out as well.

Excalibur is obtained by going into the lair of the summons in the underworld and getting the rat tail from a chest, going to the mythril grotto (you'll have to carry the hoverboard) where a mini person is looking for tails (near mythril), trading the rat tail for adamantium, then taking the mythgraven sword to kokkol's forge near tomra. There, he will turn your mythgraven blade into excalibur. Ragnarok is a better version of that sword, obtained by defeating dark bahamut in the lunar subterrane B5F. Although at your power level, there's no way you can beat him, so just ignore that for now.

I'm sure there's something else I'm forgetting but just take a look at the DS version FAQs for any additional information. The versions aren't exactly identical but they're mostly the same.

Ice shield isn't horrible to keep around, shields generally have low def and pre dragon/crystal shields you don't really have better options than just swapping around fire/ice/diamond to negate a certain element. Aegis is helpful but iirc only Cecil can equip that and Kain is still just left rotating elemental shields until genji/dragon become available.

At least it makes me feel better to know I'm not complete garbage in battles then lol

In terms of battle make sure you're using slow and protect every battle. Cecil learns protect, so he can aoe cast that on the first turn while rosa uses slow. Blink is also very helpful vs anything that relies on physicals (behemoth comes to mind).

Yep. I quickly learned to use slow down there. I actually leaned toward shell over protect because magic seemed to destroy my party but I have no problems switching to protect

The final dungeon of FF4 is fucking brutal. It's 10 floors and the only save point is 5 floors in.

It's not terribly difficult outside of the last few floors and the chest bosses, even in the DS version. You just can't get complacent.

For what it's worth, I have done speed runs meaning low level runs in all versions but the DS one, and it's actually safer in the final dungeon than parts of the lunar ruins. Stupid worms in the caves can party wipe your first time through.

Protect and Shell stack. Shell is also only single target while protect is AOE, so you can use both.

I honestly haven't used any all game until the battle before Lunar Subterrane. Didn't know to look in the Key items section.
