Do they both just play at 4K with no difference in graphics quality whatsoever?

The S can play 4k Blu-rays at native 4k, but it can only upscale games to 4k. It cannot play games at a native 4k.

The X can do both. It can play both 4k Blu-ray and games at a native 4k.

I didn't think the S can play 4K blu ray. I thought I just streamed 4k videos.

No, it has a 4k Blu-ray player that can play 4k Blu-ray movies at a native 4k resolution.

It just cannot play games at a native 4k. It upscales games to 4k.

Um, not really anymore. 4K Blu-ray players are fairly cheap now. You can buy them for like $150 now.

Sure, the Xbox is a 4k Blu-ray player and video game console in one, but standalone 4k player prices have fallen a lot in the last year or two.

Tech is really only insanely expensive when it is first introduced. I remember 1080p Blu-ray players being like $1,000 when they were first introduced. The PS3 at $600 was ridiculously cheap for a 1080p Blu-ray cheaper back then.

Upscaling takes a picture at a lower resolution and stretches it out to fit a higher resolution.
It will never look as good as if it was natively rendered at the higher resolution.

Upscaling basically means that it will attempt to "fill in" the missing pixels. Some players are good at upscaling, and some are bad.

Native means that it doesn't have to fill in missing pixels, since all the pixels are there already.

Blu-ray players will upscale DVDs. A 1080p Blu-ray in a Blu-ray player will play at a native 1080p, but DVDs in a Blu-ray player will be upscaled.

Likewise, a 4k Blu-ray player will upscale both 1080p Blu-rays and DVDs.

There is still a pretty significant difference in quality between upscaling and native though. A DVD in a Blu-ray player is never going to look as good as an actual Blu-ray.

TVs also have built-in upscalers. For example, when you play a DVD, the TV will automatically upscale the image. Again, some TVs will do this well and some do it poorly. It depends on how good your TV is. It's usually better to let the player itself do the upscaling though unless you have a very good TV.

You probably would notice but with a 250 price difference it really isn't worth it.

If you have the same game being played on two screens side by side, one in native 4K and one upscaled, if both screens are big enough and you are sitting close enough, then you might see a small difference.

If you are just playing and enjoying a game in upscaled 4K, then you will not sit and think This game would be so much more fun if it was in native 4K instead....

Watch this analysis of Red Dead Redemption 2.

It also gives you an example of the checkerboarding 4K which the PS4 Pro uses. Xbox One X uses a native 4K resolution.

Xbox One X is the best way to play this game, until the PC port comes along.

On top of that, for certain Xbox 360 games, there are updates to force some of those games into a native 4K resolution, along with more stable performance than an Xbox One or an Xbox 360. Along with the few Original Xbox backwards compatible titles that are forced into a 16x resolution (although I am not sure what exactly the resolutions are).
