I assume it's because "Nazism" in German means nationalist + socialist party, regardless of their actual policies.

I thought that as well until just recently when I learned that it is actually a bit more complicated than that. "Nazi" is short for "ignatius", which is to mean 'a person of a clumsy, or aloof, peasant-like disposition'. The Nazis (Hitler specifically) actually despised being called Nazis, as it was intended to be derogatory and it was taken as such early on.

I think I heard this on a podcast somewhere but I just checked wikipedia to double check and it is true by all appearances.

That being said, the Nazis were indeed socialists. National socialists to be precise, they believed they could socialize not just the means of production, but the actual people as well.

Facism can resemblea form of state socialism, with a mixing of public and private interests. The issue is who gets to be a member of the state. In the case of Nazism, there is an organic conception of the state, with membership limited to those of certain ethnic origins and psychological qualities.

Do note they were killing Marxists and Lenninist, which call for the destruction of traditional social structures, religion, and ethnic lines, to form a new soceity. This was anathema to facism that Nazism advanced. Socialism is also not the endgame of Marxism and Lenninism. It it a stage in the historical dialectic prior to communism.

Also note, the communists war against each other too, see Trotsky and such. Nazism can still have aspects of socialism and yet fight against other ideologies with socialistic tendencies.

Do not think that is fair. Nazism was also quite reactionary

Extreme politcal idealogies tend to resemble each other on the poles. I had a theory professor describe it as a warping line, where extreme left and right politics bend towards one another on a line. In pure distance along the line, very diffrent, but in realtiy, the results look very much the same. The who whys and wheres are different, but the outcomes produce oppresive regimes.

A good example is consider Euro style nationalistic parties. Many want to keep the welfare state in place, but highly regulate immigration and expect members of thr nation-state to adhere to traditional social values in so far as social mores and religion.

I do not know it by that name, but could be.

I took a ton of politcal theory in undergrad and grad school, so I sometimes just remember concepts.
