This actually happened quite often to me. I use to work at target and had a bunch of red shirts and khaki pants. If Inever accidentally wore them and went to target, people would ask me stuff. This also happened at the grocery store around the corner. I was wearing a reflective vest since I stopped by the store on the way home. And someone thought I worked there while I was looking for cat food. I guess because of the vest. But the store employees dont wear vest, so IDK...

I think this was the plot to an episode of 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Personal experience, 15 years back there was an Electronics Boutique in the mall that I would shop in once a week. 1 out of 8 times someone would talk to me as if I worked there and ask for help finding something. I'd point them to that section then go back to browsing the shelves.They start to get annoyed and ask 'don't you work here?'
No...

Every so often the same thing would happen in the book store located on the other side of the mall.

I don't think it was related to particular shirt, though.

One time I was at target and this fat lady wearing a red shirt was sitting on the ground in front of the soda going through the twelve packs of cans, and I went up to her and asked her where something was, and she was like I dont work here and I was like my bad

It was super embarrassing. And a guy who worked there saw and came over and was like wtf are you doing to the lady and she was like Im just trying to find the best pack of cans

It was really weird

Happened to me once at Staples. Well almost. She opened her mouth to ask me a question then realized my shirt wasn't the same red.

People at Target are stupid. I wear all black and constantly get stopped by shoppers asking if I work there and all I can do is stare at them like they must be crazy until they go find another employee to report me for my bad customer service.

I love seeing the employees quizzical looks when they go he doesnt work here before I walk off.
