I think i saw a gameplay video and coupled with it being a turn based strategy i just noped out of it. But now that I've given Civ an honest chance I actually kinda like it.. I still think it is boring as shit to watch someone else play though and can be a little slow but otherwise it's a cool little game

I'm sure it's a fun series but after seeing how much time some of my friends would sink into it I don't want to be caught in that trap.

The newer games are boring because they take 30 hours each to finish. The only fun one is Civ Rev because it takes 5 hours at most

is there really that much of a difference between 5 and 6?

and yeah i saw the game i did (standard) was like 500 turns, i played for like an hour and was only at like turn 60, maybe even less. Got stuck in a dark age because i didn't understand the food mechanic and got involved in some wars with egypt. So next time, i'm either going to crush Egypt straight in the beginning or avoid them completely but have troops stationed in my territory on Fortify so I don't get surprise invaded like last time

Well, in 6 you have to set up your Cities with certain things. It was just more simple in 5. You didn't need to fulfill so many requirements. Like you have to be next to lake or a mountain. It has to be flat, it has to be this. That wasn't in V. What your cities were next to only effected a few things like a couple of the Wonders.

ironically paradox's history started with them taking board games and turning them into strategy games

europa universalis was originally a 600 hour board game made in 1993

and hearts of iron is based on another game called the war in north africa which is like a 50,000 hr game

I like the combat more. I've played like 500 hours of CK2 and the EUIV combat looks much closer to that than HOIIV

yeah, HOI has always been combat-focused since it's 10 years broken down by the hour rather than 250 years broken down by the day

also the variation in unit move speed in HOI is much greater than any other paradox title. meanwhile, economics are simplified to the point of supply train capacity and industrial capacity, versus the complex wealth mechanisms of EU titles and the industrial commodity markets of victoria

Having a front line of motorized/motorized rocket artillery going 12 KM/H and just overrunning all those measly 4 KM/H troops everything is one of life's small joys.

I do wish the economy was more complex though. Next DLC will finally include fuel (currently just oil raw material).

i was always more a fan of the wide-arc encirclement technique, since i could still use trailing infantry to fill the gaps. overrun works but it's something you could never do to a human. defense in depth is a hard counter to it.

My best encirclement I once had ~200 unit encirclement of Soviet troops. Get a front line of 10 combat width infantry only on aggressive orders to make it so the enemy can't retreat, have 2 40 combat width tank armys (10 or so units each) a mix of light tanks 2, self propelled artillery 2, self-propelled anti-air 2 with motorized infantry back up. That allowed me to have like a 6 month conquest of USSR. I don't think the tactic works quite as well with the new build, at least I haven't been able to pull it off recently.

going back to HOI2/stony road mod, which basically was max difficulty for a human-played USSR (your organization max literally gets dropped to 10), the solution was an anchor of level 10 fortresses running from sevestopol to leningrad

literally 10x the german force could do nothing to break it. basically the maginot line of russia.

is that still a thing in HOI4?

Nope, level 10 forts are expensive. 500 per level and you have to build a level 1 fort to build a level 2 fort, etc. Forts don't benefit from state infrastructure level like factories do, only construction bonuses, so I think late game to build a level 10 fort from scratch is the cost of like 4-6 military factories. So just not worth it.

I rarely build forts beyond level 4, level 2 is the normal for me.

USSR only gets temporarily nerfed now. And you can get rid of the nerf by going to war. So when I go USSR I first get 2 things of political power, justify war on Iran and Turkey (who's independence is guaranteed by Romania). Then I do the great purge. Purge ends, war starts, you beat up 3 easy nations, get more territory, lots of oil and chromium. So by 1938 I have a super soviet.
