I can still jump into any of them at any time and still have a good time. I also don't do any of the competitive stuff though, I strictly play with other and by myself for fun.

I would personally have an equals sign between Melee and Smash 4. Melee is the best for serious competitive play, while 4 is the best for just flat-out having fun, either alone with the single-player content or just screwing around with friends or online. They're both equally great overall, but with their own unique strengths. Besides that, I agree.

Smash 4 is my favorite Smash game

It's just too bad Ultimate is going to make it obsolete

All of them suck competitively except Melee and hopefully Ultimate.

Brawl and 64 are camp fests, and 64 is particularly degenerate with one stage, certain characters relying solo on brain dead 0 to death combos like Falcon or Puff, trash recovery on everyone but Pikachu, and not built in time limit, so people would opt to sit in advantage until the other person ran in.
Brawl is obviously hugely flawed, so I don't need to go into that.

I loved Smash 4 back when vectoring was a thing on the 3DS and played hundreds of hours of it, and I think it is really unfun competitively. Degenerate characters like Bayonetta, Cloud, Diddy, and Sheik. Characters that literally just spam throw into aerial follow ups and nothing else, like DK and Bowser. Recoveries being way too good overall, and ledge trumping leading to recovering being brain dead and skill-less. Movement still sucks but at least it doesn't have tripping.

While Ultimate does borrow things like ledge trumping from 4, I think the weakened recoveries overall, and nerfed air dodging makes it a way better mechanic. Plus being able to do any move out of dash sounds super fun and looks good. I think the balance is still gonna be terrible in ultimate, with characters that have no ledge trapping ability, no projectiles, and trash range/hit boxes still littering the game roster, only the top like 30ish at most will probably be viable, based purely on how insane the top characters are looking this time around. With patches it is looking very promising though.

Project M > Melee > 64 > Smash 4 > Brawl gameplay wise.

I do love brawl with the subspace emissary. Not getting my hopes up on balancing. Especially I dont think theres any fighters i played that was really completely balanced. With 70+ characters for Ultimate I am expecting a top 10 to dominate. Only brawls balancing made sense why it was bad because sakurai said it was going to be casual and he really meant it.

aren't only like 5 characters viable in melee?

Currently Fox, Falco, Sheik, Marth, Falcon, Puff, Ice Climbers, Peach, Pikachu, Samus and Yoshi are all used at the top level, so about 11. However, like I mentioned for Ultimate, I don't believe the number of character viable determines how good a game is, solely the gameplay and it is incredibly obvious how Melee is a fantastic competitive game in terms of gameplay.

Its also a percentage thing. 11/25 characters are viable in melee. To have 40% of the cast viable in ultimate would require 35 characters to be viable.

Yeah, honestly percentages don't matter. I still think all of them are fun to play casually in their own respect, and they all are/were played competitively at some point so they are all viable competitively too. I just think certain games are better from both a playing and spectating perspective than others.

i thought l cancelling was intentional and was even in the instruction booklet of smash 64

and i just like melee because of all the techs u can do and other stuff that makes it fun. but i do agree only like 6-8 of the cast is viable and not a good thing. especially bottom tiers like kirby

I believe he is referring to wavedashing

The developers knew about the glitch before release, but didn't think it could be abused like it was

So if something wasn't intended (and for the record, most relevant stuff in Melee was intended - they didn't expect players to find ways to use wavedashing to their advantage, but they knew it existed since having people slide when they air dodge diagonally into the ground is really the only logical way to handle that situation), it doesn't exist and any fun you had with it didn't happen? It doesn't matter how or why Melee turned out the way it did, it plays the way it does and a lot of people love that way.

I dont play Melee much but a friend does and he explained the mechanics in a similar manner, so I would have to agree.

This is a myth. And even if it was true, that wouldn't matter. There are exceptions, but most of the time exploiting something unintended in games isn't a bad thing.

Anyway, I think Melee and Brawl were the best because they had the most content. Smash 4 has the best roster, but it was a dull game. There wasn't a whole lot to actually do. I've realized that I may have just slightly grown out of Smash, and that might be a big influence on my opinion.

I'd say Melee > Brawl > 64 > Smash 4 I guess.

it is, but it's nowhere near the level it's at in melee, where you have near complete control of your trajectory on many characters
