Very much true. Lots of people consider the Bible as it is now to be the true word of God, when it is in fact a handpicked collection of scriptures that were convenient for the religious authority at the time.

There were like a hundred different types of Christianity during the 2nd century. Some established religions even went so far as to restructure themselves around Jesus (Gnosticism). Even Revelations was believed to be written by an extinct Christian sect who was antagonistic toward the Roman Church. There was a version that even suggested Jesus had sex with men.

It's the same with Judaism. They have the book of Enoch, which gives an in depth story about the Nephilim that actually clarifies certain points in Genesis. It was highly popular during the 2nd Temple era, but it's denounced by modern Judaic sects because their theology says angels lack the free will to revolt from God.

Christmas has always amused me. It's hilarious comparing the historical Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra with Santa Claus. The real guy actually got into a slapping fight at the Council of Nicea over the Arian heresy.
