The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) formally classified Gaming Disorder as an addiction last June, placing it with drugs, alcohol, and gambling as a virulent scourge.

But dopey games are just part of the overall problem. Addiction to devices and machines can destroy human potential in a variety of ways.

Teenagers are at the greatest risk even though their parents can easily become addicted as well. The family that texts together has replaced the family that prays together.

Lets get very specific. Most teens cannot function without their iPhone. Their entire social world is built around them. No longer do kids call each other, its Snapchat and texting - especially Snapchat where they can send pictures with their words. Incredibly, email is obsolete in urchin-land. Everybody is snapping and chatting.

The result is no voice or in person contact. Talk to a teenager face-to-face and its very likely the kid will not look you in the eye. They look down. Like they do when snap chatting.

Witty conversation? Forget it. Heres a typical lead sentence on a device: U there, dude? LOL. LMAO.

If you dont know what that means - good for you.

So, the art of conversation has been largely destroyed. Along with that, personal empathy is declining. You cant feel a persons pain or joy for that matter through a machine.

Internet addiction is changing the world and not for the better. Human beings that resist the pull of the machines and strive to become well rounded people will prosper greatly in the future. But, sadly, most people will not resist internet addiction.

And they will suffer the consequences.

Pretty much hits the nail on the head with this conclusion. I was just as awkward as the next kid when I was younger but at least we were able to hold conversations and put our thoughts into words. Kids these days not only can't verbalize their ideas they refuse to lest they be deemed offensive. This dangerous combination of being unable to speak in nuanced ways coupled with the development of outrage culture will be interesting to watch going forward.

Yes I do disagree. I have siblings who are teenagers, and nephews in grade school and they're all totally normal socially

Just because people use snapchat and messenger and shit instead of email or telephones, they're not gonna turn into socially stunted abnormal weirdos lol

I think this actually is because kids these days rarely have any face-to-face interaction with adults other than their parents. They only interact with people their own age. I doubt they do this when talking face-to-face with their peers. So when they are suddenly talking to some creepy old guy like Bill O'Reilly, it's a totally new and kind of intimidating situation, so they look down.

Interesting because I also have a teenage sibling and many relatives with children and they all have in common the unfortunate trait that they pick using electronics over going to or being in social scenarios 9/10 times.

I'd suggest taking a look around the next time you go to a restaurant and pick any under 20 person and time how long they go without checking their phone. I think you'll be surprised.

They exist, but face-to-face one-on-one communication between the teacher and student is quite rare and usually quite limited. Also at that point the student has probably been made more comfortable and familiar by being around the teacher for a while so it's not actually a stranger.

They're saying exactly what the point of the op-ed was. That communication, more specifically speaking, is a skill that is becoming underdeveloped in today's youth due to the rampant use of addiction technologies.

Smartphone addiction is the one that disturbs me because it's so common and obvious. (Technically, I suppose it's more an addiction to social media.) Going out and seeing an entire family or a group of friends who are not talking to each other because ALL of their attention is on their phones is kind of depressing. I see this everywhere. And don't get me wrong, I know it's their right to do what they want and I don't think it makes them bad people at all. I liken it more to how you might feel sympathy if you walked around your neighborhood and literally everyone else was shooting up with cocaine when they're in a restaurant, at a museum, at a park, etc.

What a stupid article. Why would anyone want to call each other and when you can text each other throughout the day? Im not going to talk to my friends on the phone all day but I can at least text them throughout the day. I do call my grandparents or parents but thats completely different. Hell, I cant call my brother that much because of his job and his location but I can text him.

And of course teenagers look down and act awkward in social situations. Theyre teens. What do you expect? Its like whoever wrote this doesnt remember what it was like to be in high school. A time where people are awkward and unsure of themselves.

Not everyone has time for a witty conversation. And because of texting and social media, we can keep in contact over long distance. Yes, you can get addicted to social media and phones but lets not pretend that it doesnt have huge benefits.

And no, personal empathy is not declining. You can still tell when someone is upset or happy or whatever through text. Just like you can tell when the writer of a book is passionate or phoning it in. Thats called reading comprehension. If my friend sends me a snap of them looking confused, then by George theyre probably confused.

This is another case of older folk being out of touch.
