Unlocking characters was cool back when it was a surprise, but now we know everything immediately, months before the game comes out. There's no longer a point.

Also, unlocking characters has nothing to do with paying for characters. The former is game design, the latter is business practice.

There's nothing to pretend about, because that's nonsense. Timesaver dlc only happened after they started nickel and diming actual content, not before.

Unlocking characters was cool back when it was a surprise, but now we know everything immediately, months before the game comes out. There's no longer a point.

I'm actually inclined to take this sort of stance too

when you don't know what characters are available, unlocking is a fun process where when you do certain things you are surprised by a character you don't know at a moment of gameplay you weren't expecting them at. It's a fun "wow" moment, a tense situation to make sure you actually beat them for the unlock (well, they're not that hard, but still) and a sense of progression as you fill up the roster with all these unexpected characters.

If you know every character in advance, it just feels like a sorta lame way of locking off ones you might want to play with your friends :/

The thing is that there are fucking 66 characters to unlock in this game, and people kind of want to play their favorites on launch day/weekend when they go to celebrate the game's release with all their friends that they've been waiting to play with for so long. There's never been such a huge portion of the cast locked off before.

But because there's so many characters is the reason why this makes sense. Now instead of just picking one character and never experimenting at all, you're forced to get a taste of everyone so you can truly know who's for you. And think of newcomers. They'd be overwhelmed at the amount so by steadily feeding them they won't be.

And yeah, who knew i wanted to be able to play the game i paid 60 bucks for right out of the box and not have to invest 20-30+ hours just to make the game complete?

Its a bullshit practice to have to unlock so many fighters, when 3/4ths of the roster is fucking unplayable at the start of the game, thats a problem

They could just, I dunno, appease both sides by making all characters available multiplayer only from the start, but keep the unlock modes in single player for that crowd as well

I'd be fine with that, though I'm sure there's some weirdo ultraniche for whom the main experience is single player runs with all characters in an arbitrary order.

unlockable characters in any fighting game is just annoying, especially when you already know all the characters. it means you gotta waste some time before you can play your main if your main isn't one of the few you start off with. should have an option to just start with all the characters unlocked if you don't wanna go through the hassle tbh

I would assume that you can get everyone through World of Light. If not though then that is extremely stupid on their part and I'll be the first to advocate for removing unlock conditions.

I'm gonna guess some through that and some through Classic. And probably a certain amount of Vs. matches as an alternate way.

I don't think I'm crazy when I say a mass chunk of people playing Smash play it for online and/or multiplayer with friends, an experience which is extremely crippled by only having eight available fighters.

"Yeah guys Smash is out let's play!! -- Oh wait we only have eight characters to choose from, guess we have to go single player now so everyone go back home unless y'all wanna be stuck as Mario vs. Pikachu"

but smash isn't a fighter they don't deserve to have anything unlocked

I personally don't mind unlocking characters but I can see other people's perspective when they say 66 is overkill. They could've struck a balance had the newcomers and echoes be unlockable.
