Any "negotiation" experts here?

So far after 70 pages it's basically "lie and be an asshole," but I guess that's how negotiations work.

The context matters a lot. Negotiating employee staffing with other project managers is different than negotiating with subcontractors on a proposal, for example. There's no one size fits all approach.

The circumstances surrounding the negotiation can add a lot of variables you need to consider beyond the actual negotiation itself. Your reputation, the likelihood of the other party working with you again, the criticality of the decision, etc all factor into it. You can hardball someone, but if you need to work with them again in the future that could cost you more in the long run than what the current gain is worth. Similarly, if you come off as an asshole but you're also a leader, you're going to lose the support of your employees and that has significant impacts on productivity, especially during a crunch. You can get away with being a dick to car salesman because you're likely to never work with them again, but that's not the same with someone you'll be negotiating with again in the future. Plus if you're part of a larger organization, recognizing which battles to fight and which to cede for political capital that can be used in the future is a skill in and of itself.

I read a book on it years ago. You should look up principled negotiation.

These books are written by alpha personality types who get off on treating every social interaction like a power struggle. My dad was one of them. Very successful business man. Absolute asshole.

I hate type A people as well, needlessly aggressive, competitive and not cooperative

Still though, helps to read about their tactics and understand how they function

I remember talking to one guy after a stranger let us through a door first. He was like "yeah we alpha"

I was like he's just being courteous numb nuts.
