Running around on the map felt like if a pokemon game was 100% tall grass with no safe spots. Kinda discouraged exploration.

10 was the only one I've gotten all the way through. One of my favorites. It was at least clear where you had to go (since it was basically just a straight line).

7 Gets all the praise so that's why I'm asking about that one

Random battles on the world map are much less frequent than everywhere else. Exploration is no problem.

Play the retranslation. There's one for both the PC and PS1 versions.

The random battles are going to be annoying no matter how you slice it.

If you can't handle the random battles, then (older) JRPGs just aren't for you. If you can, then absolutely play it.

There are probably GameShark codes to reduce the random battle rates and multiply earned experience points. Shouldn't be a problem finding something similar for the PC version. I don't see anything wrong with this since it's just artificial playtime anyway.

The stupid thing is, Squaresoft had already started using visible enemies in Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG but still went with the invisible ones for FF7. Makes no sense and the game has aged poorly because of it.

It may be nostalgia speaking but the story and game still holds up. If you didnt like it back in the day your tastes may have changed and you may like it now. But chances are if you didnt like it in it's time your not gonna warm to it now.
