How could a party composed mostly of pro-trade, fiscally responsible, small government folks have such broad support for things like medicare for all? 51% of GOP voters support it. And why do more GOP voters support decreasing legal immigration than increasing it if they support legal immigration?

Of course it's impossible to separate the two groups because they aren't actually distinct and there's plenty of overlap, but I'd like to see a serious defense of the idea that there are more of the former.

I appreciate your actual substance to this topic, sir. You're a good person, and here's my thinking:

I think that the idea of "progression" isn't fair that it's restrictive to the left. I think we all want rights for gays. We all want people (human beings) to be equal. We are all human beings. We should all have the freedom to do as we want as long as we aren't breaking the law or hurting other people.

I think most young people liked the idea of Obamacare. I did. I mean, even Romney did - as, technically, it was his model. We are a first world country, and I think we should have medical support for everyone.

I think most people approve of legal immigration, but also, don't like the rate at which illegal immigrants are coming in. Let's face it: The more illegals that come in; the lower the salary people's jobs are going to be. Nobody should be against legal immigration, though. So, perhaps, the current climate and rhetoric of the President is certainly to blame for that.

this is pre-Trump but I doubt it has changed much?

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/05/12/support-steady-for-same-sex-marriage-and-acceptance-of-homosexuality/

And as was the case a year ago, there remains a substantial divide between partisans on the issue. Democrats are more than twice as likely as Republicans to favor gay marriage (70% vs. 33%).

Yet there are key differences within the two parties as well. Among Republicans, 71% of conservative Republicans oppose allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally, more than twice the share of GOP moderates and liberals (34%). A 55% majority of moderate and liberal Republicans favor allowing same-sex marriage.

Within the GOP, these ideological differences also are notable across voters primary preferences for the partys 2016 presidential nominee. About half (52%) of GOP voters who back Donald Trump (now the partys presumptive nominee) say they oppose same-sex marriage, compared with 70% who preferred Ted Cruz and just 37% who backed John Kasich.

of course tbf this shows that Trump was actually the choice of the more moderate members of the GOP on this issue, but that's still more of his supporters who oppose same sex marriage than support it

also

http://www.pewforum.org/fact-sheet/public-opinion-on-abortion/

check that out, many more Republicans oppose than support abortion

seems pretty obvious that what I said is accurate unless someone has a good counter argument and opposing data sets that show otherwise
