My audio cut out in the middle of a YouTube video. When I decided to sign out and try again, I noticed that my power off options were to restart and update or shut down and update. I did a restart and update and a message came back that I had no audio output.

I go online to look up how to resolve this. I follow the steps, but nothing happens when I click the button. I decide to restart again. The screen says "restarting" for a solid ten minutes before an error message pops up saying sorry, but the computer will have to restart. (Which is what I was trying to do.)

I'm going to try again. I'm going to restart it and see if it'll let me troubleshoot this time. If not, I'll have to delete my cartoon porn and get my laptop looked at. <_<

microsoft cut a deal with the government to break your PC if you have questionable content on it so you'd go in to get it fixed and possible get caught

With Windows 10, you don't need to take a computer into a repair shop unless you have defective hardware, and even then only if you don't know how to replace parts yourself. Back up your files to a USB stick and then reinstall Windows 10.

See under "Reset your PC":
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options

Before doing that, create Windows 10 installation media:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If resetting your PC doesn't work, install Windows 10 from scratch using the Windows 10 installer you made earlier. It's been awhile since I did this, but if it asks if you want to keep anything for either process, say no. You want a clean install. Make sure to run Windows Update multiple times to make sure everything is up to date before you put your programs and files back on.

Good luck!

Uninstall, and reinstall your audio drivers.

Pathetic. Even Windows ME Update wasn't this broken.

After five restarts, things are finally back in order. I didn't have to reinstall and I didn't have to go through the drive check. It's funny that it won't say it's in need of an update when it really is.

It took about an hour in total. Two of those restarts set error messages.

Sometimes disabling Fast Boot in the BIOS helps with some updates.

Don't even have to go there, simply either 'settings> power>additional power settings' or go through the control panel and find the power section. Either way they lead to the same section and you want to find the 'choose what power buttons do' on the left and turn off fast start at the bottom under shut down settings. It's actually recommended to turn it off(opposite of what the tip says here to have it on) because a shut down doesn't do a proper shut down, potentially screwing up programs like AV and other stuff that needs to be closed and relaunched. Alternatively if you leave fast startup on you'd instead need to restart, not shut down, to get the same effect. It's very convoluted and the benefit is tiny compared to the headache having it on causes.

From the sounds of it I wouldn't be suprised if you just suffered the glorious october update finally or something similar as that one broke audio drivers. If so you'll probably wanna make sure system restore is still making restore points since it turns itself off every major/feature update. If it wasn't the october update you should probably turn it back on if you previously did... since it's probably off.

Another simple way to force a full shutdown is to just hold Shift while you click the shutdown button.

It's honestly so bad/annoying that at least once or twice a day or session I find myself going through 'control panel > system and security > security and maintence > view reliability history' simply to see what updates and drivers were mucked with. Haven't had an audio driver lately, but my favorites are when I'm sitting here and notice the computer's wifi light beaming brightly when it's supposed to be off. Oh, update reset all the network settings. Or when trying to read/watch something and the screen goes black because of a display driver.

If you poke around you'll see it state it'll do it when not being used, but it's a lie...

one of my friends disabled windows 10 updates entirely cause everytime he updates it breaks his computer. like it goes to the black error screens on boot up and he has to reinstall the OS. he hasn't updated in years cause if it. he actually tried recently and the same thing happened. so he's basically stuck on whatever version the install is

I've never had a problem with it before. There's a partition I can access on the HDD pre-boot to recover the system if anything goes wrong. It's not like I really keep anything important on here anyway. I've gotten over trying to save things after I lost all my files across multiple machines.
