"In the wake of meteorologist Jessica Starr's suicide months after undergoing SMILE laser eye surgery, questions about the risks of vision correction surgery have come to the surface anew.

Starr's was by no means the first suicide that followed a laser eye surgery operation that left a patient in constant pain, according to their families, suicide notes critics of laser procedures."

"Max Cronin, Colin Dorrian and Officer Lawrence Campbell, all committed suicide, and all wrote notes suggesting that they experienced excruciating pain after laser eye surgery that made life unlivable."

"According to the FDA's most recent study 95 percent of patients, however, are pleased with the results of their operations."

"Eye surgeons use a very thin laser to cut a partial circle into the front of the cornea, large enough that they can fold back that flap to get to the part of the cornea underneath, which needs to be reshaped in order to correct faulty vision.

But if the flap isn't cut or replaced perfectly, the healing process can create visual disturbances which can be painful.

Plus, the cornea is densely packed with nerves, making it one of the most sensitive tissues in the whole human body.

Even when done carefully, laser eye surgery cuts through these.

This disruption can cause dry eyes, one of the most common side effects of laser surgery. It can also cause intractable nerve pain, the underlying mechanisms for which are less well understood."

Dr Waxler says that in some cases instead of growing back together, severed nerves end up 'curled up in a ball and they just keep firing.'

Nerve pain is notoriously difficult to treat, so these patients end up suffering for months or years, and are sometimes 'abandoned' by doctors who can't find a solution for them."

i've had eye surgery (not lasic), i'd advise against eye surgery for anything non life threatening.

I mean it is dailymail. As far as this story goes there's no evidence she even killed herself because of lasik let alone that others are doing so because of it

Well, just look at the stories. I doubt they're made up.

I wouldn't take the risk personally. If I were in their situation, wearing contacts or glasses would be much better than the chance of being in such pain that I would want to end my life--all over not having to wear contacts or glasses.

If you have concerns, you can Google the names mentioned in the article, including the doctor referenced.

I'm not saying LASIK is a death sentence.. just posting an article. Take it as you will.

I do believe there can be devastating complications for a procedure that is largely unnecessary.

I had no idea this was a risk. I had the surgery years ago and luckily had no pain associated with it. However, it has essentially worn off. I have to wear glasses now, the same as before the surgery. It was great for awhile but not worth it for something that was temporary. I would not recommend it.

Lasik is literally the most successful elective surgery in America. It's complication rates are extraordinarily low.

Just like anything in life, though, there's a risk.

I plan on going for vision correction surgery in the future. It has always been on the cards to look at operations that don't involve cutting the eye and research on the latest technologies. I suppose this article, no matter how low the risk actually is, makes it more imperative to do my research.
