Retail workers aren't thin skinned. You put up with a lot of shit in those jobs and some us hold on to them for years, all for comparatively little reward. That's basically the polar opposite of 'thin skin.'

And even then, this is a particular stressful time of year to work retail, with longer days spent dealing with stressed out or entitled customers. So back to back selling to people while doing a certain amount of emotional labor for them while you're at it. You're going to be emotionally exhausted at the end of the day no matter how Zen you are.

This. Even when you've asked me the most asinine, idiotic question I've been asked all day, I'm not going to react, I'm going to smile and put on a front and help you.

Only when you've walked away am I going to roll my eyes and think "What a dumb motherfucker. Goddamn, people are stupid."

Also, I've never had a problem with a retail worker being a dick to me, because I don't act like an insufferable shithead. So if you have this issue, it's certainly a "you" problem

Service industry people generally have to smile, be polite, and represent the best face of their company while being shit on by customers who treat them as subhuman.

See: emotional labor.

Who would be able to last in retail with thin skin? You'd be emotionally annihilated before you'd know it. Especially this time of year, it's non stop, plate after plate, of shit sandwiches in every respect.

I work in a video game store. We've been doing $20,000-$60,000 every single day since the second week of december, and my store is the size of a walk in closet.
We keeps display cases for games out to advertise that "hey, we sell this game!" But it is all paid advertising space.
So even if we run out of stock, we absolutely have to keep those on the wall.

The amount of times in one day that I get shouted at for being out of stock while having that advertisement up, that would break me if I were thin skinned.

If you think retail workers are thin skinned more likely you are an entitled asshole who screams "CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT!" when you try to return a 10+ year old worn and ripped shirt because it doesn't fit your lard ass anymore.
