Like I said, this boils down to standards that the women has. For most guys attractiveness is not even an issue. The average guy has a great chance of missing out even if he goes for the (not the Belle of the balls). Women can just go into a room and say.. anyone want some and have guys lined up.

Have you ever seen what real hookers look like, most of them are not pretty or healthy looking. And yet people pay to get with them.

Females that do this are the females that aren't worth your time. Two reasons.
1) If you two are a couple, it's really very dishonest to have a back up.
2) It's a pretty big signal that this person is scared of being alone, more scared to be alone then scared to be in a bad relationship. These females will settle for something they don't really want, and deal with it as the bitterness of what they wanted and don't have bubbles, until it explodes in a very bad way.
Females afraid to be alone are prone to very bad relationships and very bad break ups. And usually have confidence issues, which opens up a whole annoying aspect of being in a relationship with them.

This is just my personal experience.

If anyone truly believes such a behavior can be generically entirely lumped into such a large group like this, you have a much bigger, personal problem than how you perceive a woman would treat you.

But also in my experience this is one of those things where women have a guy in mind who would be their backup, but the guy is not aware of it and hasn't necessarily endorsed it. Yes this is an interesting phenomena, whenever I've been ready to date someone, there's always been 2 or 3 girls I've been hanging out with that shows interest. It's both infuriating and confidence boosting. I've always done the right thing and chose the one I think I'm most compatible with, and been honest with the others though.

thing is, usually they're more interested in maintaining those contacts either for ego, or because they get something real out of the friendship

so there's no reason to be intimidated or upset by these mens appearance when you are involved with the girl they're orbiting

hell, you can be friends with them if you have common interests.

just be sure to not cut contact with all your own female friends. i think the real problem is many men don't have genuine friendships with any women and so when they see another guy have one with their partner, they assume the worst of his motivations

"i would date her if she asked" is pretty different from "i am only friends with her because she might be available at some point"
