Not gonna lie Im a casual but with winter break coming after tomorrows two finals Im ready to devote time to Smash Ultimate. I dont have all the characters unlocked and I mainly use Luigi and Inkling. I think Im at like a 5.8 on the classic mode.

Hot tip: change the controls around in options till you have a button combo that feels natural to you. I kept losing until I realized I could change the control scheme.

Didnt know I could do that. Any recommendations or is this dependent on the characters you use?

No all characters have the same basic moves but if you wanted attack to be on x and special on y and have a and b be jump you can. I personally have mine set to attack on a and x, special on b and y and jump by pressing up on the control stick.

Change the C stick to tilt attacks. Control stick up for jump is also helpful. Pick one or two characters and play online with them as much as you can. You just need experience.

Got you. Yeah I think it would be better for me to set jump to either B or left nunchuck press (if possible). Thanks for the advice.

Pick a strong and simple character. Pikachu, Inkling, and Chrom are good choices. Then watch pros play and play online.

Thats pretty much it.

Control stick up for jump is occasionally useful for certain (often character-specific) techs, but in general having the option on is detrimental because it will cause you to accidentally burn your double jump, and using it exclusively is a HUGE limiter on your ability to quickly use specific aerials immediately after jumping. In general, you never want to be using the control stick to jump unless your right thumb needs to be on the special button or C-stick while you are jumping for a specific reason.

Being good at the game is generally mostly a matter of learning movement and defensive options (especially when to shield--most very new players do not shield NEARLY as much as they should, and intermediate players may shield too much). Learning how to recover safely (almost always from below the ledge, NEVER above unless your opponent commits to low or you have a teleport) is a huge part of the game. Finally, you have to identify which moves each character has as useful tools in neutral for a given situation: which projectiles provide useful pressure or help you approach, which aerials are good for spacing and are safe enough to throw out in neutral, which grounded options are useful out of a run-in (tap down to cancel your dash to be able to use attacks other than dash attack), which moves are good punishes when reading rolls and jump-ins.

One you have that basic understanding, you need to learn how to use movement to bait attacks and whiff punish slower characters, or space attacks against faster characters so you either beat them or trade favorably. You learn how to get combos at low percents and juggles at mid percents so you can convert individual tilts and throws into a lot more damage, keep your opponent pressured at the ledge so they don't have a good way to get back to center stage, and preserve your momentum as long as possible.

I understood some of that... I dont shield too much but I think I down+shield at the wrong times. Baiting attacks and ''whiff punishing'' I cant do. Also what is whiff punishing lol :P

I'm gonna watch a lot of Smash4 tournaments over break I think.

Hitting an opponent during the animation of a missed move. So by "bait attacks and whiff punish" what he's saying is trick an opponent into throwing out a move with a long animation and then hit them during that animation when they can't dodge or shield. Of course this is much more effective against slower larger characters since they often have a lot more ending lag on their moves than smaller quicker characters.

If you want the most unhinged character, use something like Chrom. His moves have very little starting lag and ending lag, and his air speed and landing speed is one of the fastest in the game. If you smash your analog downwards in the middle of an aerial attack, you land very quickly, cancelling some of the ending lag on some moves, letting you do more follow up attacks. Roy is also similar and feels smooth to play but has a sour spot at the tip of his sword and is actually worse than Chrom in a lot of other movement stats.

The more you break out of some of the shackles of movement in the game, the more you'll feel the absolute speed of the game

There's a lot of really bad advice in this topic. Don't set attack to X lmao ffs

You just have to keep playing and practicing and you'll naturally get better. Try practicing edgeguarding against the CPU, short hop aerials, etc. Learn to predict and read your opponents, grab when your opponent lands directly in front of you
