This was a pretty good post I was legit hoping for a response to.

I'm a fan of both anime and live-action shows, and have seen way more western TV than anime in recent years. I am often bothered by overly emotive voice actors in anime, too. So that wasn't it, at least alone.

And FWIW, CV's voice-acting felt cartoony to me, too - not naturalistic.

I don't think comparing it to anime dubs is appropriate. Most dubs fall short and have pretty monotone voice acting.

It should be compared to western animation, like Avatar or Young Justice, which have phenomenal voice direction. I don't think the Voltron Netflix show is that good, but that has fine voice acting too.

I don't really have much experience with the voice work of western animation beyond video games.

I'll say something like Uncharted was probably better though yeah. Like I get the "mumble" aspect to it, but it still comes off as kind of trying to sound interesting at least (like a discount Jack Sparrow).

I'm guessing you watch a ton of anime and not a lot of live-action television? The show is very toned down from what I consider the normally over-the-top goofiness of anime voice acting, and I think a lot of that has to do with casting excellent stage and screen performers. You listed three very successful actors as ones you don't like, and I think the commonality is that they don't hamfist the performances like most anime. At least for me, someone who has tried countless times to enjoy anime and found that, most of the time, the story can't outwrite the acting. I know this isn't true anime, but it does have an eastern influence, and it's one of the rare shows of its nature I found at all enjoyable because the performances weren't beating my head in with a ballpeen hammer approach rather than a scalpel approach.

It's cool if you just enjoy a different style of television. Try as I might, I have difficulty enjoying that anime style in general. I think it's because I've been reared in western television and so that style resonates the most.

I don't watch a ton of anime, and if I do it's usually not dubbed. I did not go in expecting over the top voice acting. The voice acting in Castlevania just doesn't...flow? There are awkward pauses, lines that are delivered very quickly and mumbled, etc. This has nothing to do with my expectations of a cartoon show.

I went in hearing that this show was pretty good and my initial reaction (and continued opinion) is that the voice acting is just not good. I think it might have something to do with trying to use actors who typically (i'm assuming) don't do animation and match it with a cartoon that has mostly static characters wagging their mouths at each other.

It seems there's an empass resulting from each groups belief that the other's opinions are so wildly off base that they don't even know where to begin.

For example, the idea that the VA work is bad is so wildly insane to me that I can't even process how to discuss it. I cannot fathom such a stance. You may as well be saying that dogs breath underwater.

dogs underwater are probably easier to understand than some of the VA work in this show
