Also, your brain is supposed to really benefit from learning new languages, like the different perspectives it gives you opens up new pathways almost like using a psychedelic or something. So that could be another reason to choose the abilities over the money.

Something as simple as being able to overhear a conversation in public where people aren't using their native language would enable you to be able to spy on people without them knowing. Would also be useful for international business and brokering deals.

Well, I meant when people are speaking a different language than English in public, but that's from an American perspective. I know most other countries have a lot of different languages regularly spoken within their population.

Blackmail is an option, but not what my aim was.

But you wouldn't have a foreign accent. You'd have the native accent for whatever language you're speaking in.

Yeah, I misstated that one too because I forgot to consider that. That said, speaking in a foreign language would have an accent and you could transition in between languages within one sentence.

I found the first link first, but I reread the post and the second is what we're looking for.

Just eyeballing those totals and doing some fast math, Mandarin's shot is under 20%, the next two are under 10%, with most languages on that list coming in under 5%, many below 2.5%. With five shots, you have a good chance of getting something like Mandarin, but each random draw has an 80% chance of not being Mandarin.

I'm taking the cash. I'd take the languages if I could pick.

It's absolutely not the most difficult to learn, it's not even the most difficult one I've learned. Chinese grammar is relatively familiar. The only reason some people think it's hard is because it's lots of characters to learn, which is no more than memorization. Learning the tones isn't hard at all, it becomes routine after a little practice.

I would say Icelandic is the hardest language for English speakers AFAIK

It's not the characters (of which there are thousands of), it's the fact that it is tonal. There is a reason why Mandarin is consistently scored as the most difficult to learn. On top of learning the characters, you also need to learn the phonetic alphabet.
