Thats a fine idea, but its not going to stop the opioid epidemic. Pandoras box has been opened.

wont stop it immediately, it will fix the issue eventually as long as it comes paired with limits on opioid prescriptions.

They already have limited opioid prescriptions. I've been prescribed them for years due to a back injury but from what I hear if you aren't either dying or already on them its near impossible to get a doctor to prescribe them because theyre terrified

your post points out the exact problem. prescribing them for take home use is beyond stupid. dentists hand the damn things out like candy after tooth extractions, orthopedic doctors write life long prescriptions, oncologists give them to cancer patients with no thought of what will happen to them. they should be strictly limited to either post surgical in hospital use or end of life palliative care.

The article seems to imply the biggest problems are heroin and crack bundled with a massive homelessness problem, not prescription pain pills.

It doesn't help that the money SanFran is using to fight the problem is coming from an old fund that used to divert property tax to public schools. Throwing more money at the problem doesn't seem to have helped. It just draws more homeless to the area and the dealers are having a field day. Like or not, they need a tougher police presence to crack down on the actual dealers if they want to have any shot at treatment for addicts sticking once they've been released.

most dont wake up one day and say 'huh, i'm gonna go try heroine today!', its something that they start because they cant keep getting enough prescription drugs.

Alternatively, make drugs free. Everyone gets all the drugs they want, and the dealers are out of business
