Brawl has held up far better compared to Smash 4 since that poll took place. Brawl would have gotten 11.22% in today's poll if we threw out the last option completely, which is only about 1.5% lower than the result it got in 2016 (in a poll with only 4 options).

Despite Smash 4 collapsing from the presence of Ultimate in this poll, I can't overlook how badly Smash 4 was able to beat down Brawl in the 2016 poll. Smash 4 is clearly being SFFed into oblivion in this poll, so it may be possible that Smash 4 is still stronger than Brawl (like it showed in 2016).

Brawl had just had more and better unique things than SSB4 when comparing them to Ultimate. People remember SSE way better than Smash Tour/Run. Probably has a way higher playrate too.

I expected Melee to still win this one since I thought Brawl/4/Ultimate would LFF each other enough. But it seems that Ultimate, despite people not considering it perfect, has done things right (we have to take into account that many Melee players liked Ultimate, or so I've heard...).

Brawl has quite a few redeeming qualities, and I'm pretty sure it could still hold up well enough in a 1v1 against Melee.

Still, I'm quite surprised that Smash 4 wasn't even able to beat the original. I guess those are different fanbases?

I would bet on SSBB still be very strong. The game was nearly 3 years old when it beat SSBM. SSBB hate was already in full swing by then. People remembering SSE for the cutscenes rather than the gameplay is also in SSBB's favor.

Some of this might be Melee weakening.
It declined a good deal in that favorite GameCube game poll after Smash 4 came out. In 2015 it only got 55% on KHII due to nobody bothering to rally Melee that round - worse than Twilight Princess got in GotD. Modern Smash getting better is probably detrimental to Melee because it makes it seems less special.

There is a good point there. The general Games Contests have always been called "Best Game Ever". However, we did have another contest called "Game of the Decade" which gives no indication as to whether voters should vote for "best game" or "favorite game".

SSBM looked fine in the previous games contest. It did about as well on Chrono Trigger as FF10 did which is roughly where you would expect SSBM to be.

I still think SSB would be stronger indirectly than Brawl and potentially edge up into near-elite territory, considering that original installments of well-liked series have consistently proven to be very strong even when most people feel they've been bested by their sequels. That being said, Brawl has reached the nostalgia zone and most people appear to have forgotten their seething hate (akin to Mario Sunshine and Pokmon RSE, for example), so I think it would be a solid midcarder.

In other news, I'm checking some newer games' stats and:

Kingdom Hearts III is looking like the next FFXII in terms of strength and contest performance.
FFXIV: ARR has managed to stay relevant and it looks like it could perform well, but that isn't a GameFAQs type of game. Who knows, maybe it can beat FFXV within a 1v1 match.
Devil May Cry 5 was like: "Hey, did you know a new DMC game came out? Yeah, I somehow missed it as well", so it gives me this weird vibe it will not perform well.
Sekiro's hype died in a similar fashion as DMC5's but not as hard.
Mortal Kombat 11's reception really caught me off guard. I'm not sure if it would even make it in the field of another GotD. In fact, I don't know how the newer trilogy fares in terms of strength, but maybe MKX > MK9 >>> MK11.
REmake 2 may be the strongest entry since RE4.

So far from what I've seen.

In the latest Smash Bros. poll, Brawl would have finished with 10.48% if we completely tossed out the last option. That's only about 2% less than the result it had in 2016 despite the addition of Ultimate to the latest Smash Bros. poll.

Ultimate finished with 59.45% on Melee in the latest poll and that's a game which is less than 5 months old and likely has a playrate under 50% right now. With a performance like that, I have to think Ultimate has a good chance of being Melee directly in a 1v1 match during a contest. But it will be at least a few years before we will ever see Melee/Ultimate in a contest setting since this match is not possible in the next GotD contest. By the time we get another general Games Contest, Ultimate will have a better playrate by then.

Depends what its up against. Obviously there was a much bigger divide in that 3 way seeing as the majority of this site favors Nintendo and that 3 way poll only had 1 option for them

Red Dead Revolver finished with a playrate of 16.12% in the poll from 2 days ago.

This poll cannot be used as a playrate poll for RDR1 or RDR2 since it does not provide an exact playrate for either game. Based on the poll, the playrate for RDR1 and RDR2 should be somewhat similar. RDR1 most likely has the higher playrate because it's a much older game than RDR2, and because those who didn't like RDR1 probably aren't likely to have played RDR2. The 4th option does not imply someone having played both RDR1 and RDR2, so it would be a huge stretch to say that either game has a playrate above 40%.

I'm definitely tracking today's poll for sure. I do have partial updates for the 2009 version of this poll, just enough to produce a time period based trend chart (EBV, PHV, FNV, etc) for the poll and it clearly showed very noticeable trends back then. I don't have an hourly trend chart for the 2009 poll, though.

Soda is much more familiar to me and seems to be the most common word for them by far, so I'd go with that (and obviously Coke when talking specifically about Coca-Cola).

The primary driver of trends in this poll are time-based trends, where trends are strongly affected by what time of day you are voting in the poll at. Age-based trends do play a role in this poll, but to a much lesser extent than time-based trends. Despite the previous appearance of this poll happening back in 2009, the trends from the 2009 poll are still very similar to the 2019 poll. There are some small differences in the trends from both polls.

"My bedroom" had a strong board vote and Power Hour. It begins dropping off even before the Power Hour ends, and slowly loses strength over the next several hours before hitting rock bottom during the morning vote. After hitting rock bottom for a 2 hour period from 8:00-10:00 AM, it begins to recover from the morning vote somewhat. Strangely enough, "My bedroom" has another collapse at the start of the ASV, but at the expense of "Home office / computer room" and "Living / family / game room" exploding during the ASV. It is not until after 5:00 PM that "My bedroom" starts to recover again. The last 4 hours of the poll (and the SNV) are similar to the night vote hours, although slightly weaker.

Unlike in the 2009 poll, "My bedroom" has similar but not completely identical trends to the 2019 poll. In the 2009 poll, "My bedroom" had a strong board vote/Power Hour and continued to maintain the Power Hour strength throughout the entire night vote. The 2019 poll was different because "My bedroom" started dropping off even before the Power Hour ended and its night vote was a large step down from the Power Hour. During this poll, "My bedroom" maxed out at 59.57% at 12:10 AM. After that point, it lost a total of 18.73% to reach its lowest percentage of 40.84% at 8:00 PM. Then it gained a total of 0.37% during the final 4 hours to finish at 41.21%.

"Home office / computer room" had a terrible board vote and slightly below average Power Hour. It had a terrible night vote. The morning vote as a whole was around average. It performs best during the ASV and SNV.

"Living / family / game room" has a strong board vote, but dropped off after that to end up with an average Power Hour. It also has a fairly average night vote. The worst time period was the morning vote, but then it begins performing much better during the ASV and performs best during the SNV (excluding board vote).

"Another room" has a terrible board vote, but the Power Hour and night vote were fairly average as a whole. It performs best during the early morning vote, but drops off again after that. The late morning vote and SNV were terrible as well, while the ASV was around average.

"Dorm room" and "In class" have such low percentages (both under 1%) that there isn't much to say here with the percentages being so low. Although it is rather amusing that "In class" pulled off a 0.00% SNV.

"At work" has the most extreme trends in this poll. The board vote is pathetically bad (under 1%) while the Power Hour was still very terrible (under 3%) and yet this didn't stop "At work" from ultimately reaching a maximum percentage of 16.48% in this poll. The night vote was a major step up from its terrible Power Hour, but even the night vote was still below average. The strongest time period was the morning vote, but this was followed up with an ASV collapse that is still roughly equal to its night vote. The SNV is even worse than the ASV, but still slightly better than what it was getting during the Power Hour.

"At work" had its lowest percentage of 0.54% at 12:05 AM. After that point, it gained a total of 15.94% to reach a maximum of 16.48% at 4:45 PM. Then it lost a total of 2.04% to finish with 14.44%. The trends that we saw from "At work" supports the theory of an After Work Vote (AWV). Beginning around 5:30 PM, "At work" began losing percentage at a much faster rate than usual and this drop off is directly correlated to "Home office / computer room" and "Living / family / game room" gaining percentage during the AWV period. As voters started coming home from work, there were far less people still at work to vote for "At work" in the poll, which explains the AWV collapse here.

"Public place" has a terrible board vote and Power Hour. The night vote and early morning vote were both below average. It performs best during the late morning vote and ASV, but drops off hard during the SNV.

"Other" has a bad board vote and Power Hour. For the rest of the poll after the Power Hour, it stays fairly consistent overall.
