Banquet must be episode 3, I think

That's interesting, because we only met Ange after we read episode 3, and so it made a lot of sense to say "ah right, this Ange we see meeting Eva makes sense as happening in the universe of episode 3, since that's the one where Eva survived"

and that's the Ange we are currently with... ish... isn't it?

Eva DIED in episodes 1 and 2. if those are the "real" ones with authentic letters about them, then Ange in the future of those worlds shouldn't have been wrapped up with Eva at all

you know what, this is confusing.

so this is an "alternate reality" where ange got a meeting with this author before continuig her journey to rokkenjima

but she still has recollections of the ending of episode 4

well, okay. whatever. this doesn't even make the top 10 of weirdest meta things so.

i'm going to have to assume this segment and this mysterious author are a bit of a red herring

because it'd be really weird if a crucial character for the game, the person who literally came up with all the events of episodes 3 to 5 (and 6) was some weird kooky side character author

well, when she said she wanted ange to help her "forget her illness" i was about to groan if this was just bernkastel in disguise

but apparently it is not, it's just some new witch

apparently all witches consider boredom to be an illness, sure

anyway i was right that "some random condescending author" wasn't going to be a major factor in the game, it makes total sense that this is actually a witch. now it makes more sense.

i figured ep 3 and 4 were what they were referring to as the forged ones but wanted to make sure

I was going to suggest earlier that if Battler is now "omniscient", it'd make sense for Ange to step in as "protagonist" role in this upcoming game. Maybe that's exactly what is about to happen.

This game has such a way of making me think my theories are wrong when they are actually right =P

I said (before Ange "died") that it made alot of sense that she was being introduced as a new protagonist for Answer Arcs to allow Battler's role to change, potentially to something more villainous

Battler is not exactly "villainous" yet, though he is claiming to be the murderer in episode 5, and claiming that he's the one who did something wrong to Beatrice

But Ange is going to slot in to be the protagonist now because Battler's role has changed, and that's roughly in line with what I thought might happen

we just took a slight detour first

in other words, this new witch literally just wants to play umineko because she's bored

apparently the thing around her head is a "memory aid device" which preserves her name and appearance

in other words, if the memories were tampered with, she could look like this and think she is Aurora, but she actually isn't.

not the first time i've seen a plot twist, umineko, you won't be able to get that by me =P

and now battler has recreated beatrice as his "daughter"

not creepy at all, battler

battler's change from "clueless fool" to "enlightened gamemaster" basicaly happened over the course of, like, one short segment of a few paragraphs

and yet here we are

it's quite a change and i'm not really sure how to feel about it

i wish it had been built up to a little bit more

heck they didn't even explain it well

battler was reminiscing about the tea garden and knox's rules making the game solveable

then it was just like "and so his consciousness drifted down to the gates of purgatory where he received all the answers"

and then that was that

Featherine is talking about how meta-chatacters can die, as opposed to pieces.

She describes it purely as being based on their level of interest.

i.e. if you're still thinking and/or striving to win, you're alive

otherwise you're dead

nothing to do with actually being killed or hurt or anything like that

it's an interesting link with motivational quotes like, uh, "some people die without ever having lived" or w/e, y'know? like, being alive witout being alive. i.e. a metaphor for depression, almost. when meta-characters "die", it's because they've given up. then they come back when they regain their spirit.

interesting stuff.

yeah this is basically an extended metaphor for depression or other mental illnesses which cause you to retreat from life and lose your sense of self

or at least, that's how i interpret it

and so, battler is now in the same exact position as kinzo -

trying to recreate his beloved beatrice, who he lost

different circumstances, same story

"Beato exists as the incarnation of a rule"

hm

I find it hard to grasp this relationship that Featherine claims she has with humans

i.e.

She's a witch, a god, and Ange is just a human, so to her, talking with Ange is like talking to a book or a leaf.

I suppose it makes sense.

If I were to have a conversation with an ant that was given the ability to speak english, I'd assume the ant was beneath me, and might be equally condescending.

Certainly, human beings have a history of treating other living beings like dirt.

But if I was some sort of higher being and met another being that looked like me and talked like me and had conscious thought... could I really be so cold to them?

i wonder. it's hard to imagine.

and so, lord battler resides in the magic version of kinzo's study

there have been a ton of parallels between battler and kinzo throughout the first 5 episodes, and I don't even think I need to name them.

so i'm not surprised to see it continue.

Interesting how we talk more about Beatrice being born out of a "rule", as we also talk about how important it is for a game board to not have contradictions

And yet, Beatrice is a walking contradiction, isn't she? She's a mix of part innocent naive childishness and beauty, combined with cruel evil vulgar hag.

as if the game wasn't blatant enough with how battler was a mouthpiece of the player's solving process earlier on, we've now taken it even further as ange and featherine literally theorize over the game almost together with the player

i can't say it's not a good fit for how the game has developed though.

what we know, though, is that upon battler learning the truth, he not only holds no grudge against beatrice for slaughtering his family over and over, but also claims he's the one who did wrong to her and not the other way around

but how can it be possible for the human, 12-year old battler, to have commited a sin?

either way, this also all ties in with whatever happened at the end of ep 4. "i will kill you. you are alone on this island. and i am not you"

hm

beatrice must... represent something.

a "rule", sure.

but... here's the thing.

witches aren't real.

they don't exist.

but in this story, they do.

and i think that's because they exist as a metaphor for something, or rather, as an interpretation of reality. (like the braun tube)

beatrice represents something that battler feels the need to apoloize to. even if that something isn't "an immortal witch"

it's interesting though that battler's feelings towards beato at the moment are, like, giddy excitement and wanting to talk to her.

you'd think, if he really did something horrible in the past, a sin, and that she was the one forced to endure his torture, that this would be mixed with some hesitance.

ok, scratch that, he does try to apologize and show regret alongside his giddiness

I hope I pass Hachijo Tohya's test of being one of the 20% who can read and actually understand that the story means

i feel my thematic analysis has been pretty on point =P

wait, why are we even back to the "real" world with hachijo tohya instead of featherine

could it be that the game is telling me, again, that

real life ange with amakusa went to hachijo tohya's home and read a fanfiction

and

magic universe ange was summoned to the goddess featherine's reality to observe a game

are both possible truths?

i easily accepted that "oh, this IRL thing is fake because she's actually just meeting a witch"

but in reality, it's the same as always... they can both be valid..
