That's definitely a first step, particularly if your employer matches. But contributing enough is key. Ideally it should be 15%-20% of your pay. Definitely 10%.

And if your employer doesn't offer a 401K/Roth 401K you can always open an IRA/Roth IRA. You should probably use one even if you have a 401K even.

I contribute to a traditional TSP and I wish I had started a Roth instead. Also I feel like it's not performing as well as I would have hoped. I guess I still have like 20+ years to keep saving but damn. Or even 30+ years I guess I just feel old already.

Make sure not to deduct your Roth contributions from your W2. That would be tax avoidance, which is immoral.

You can always change your future contributions to the Roth TSP or even do a mix of them. I contribute 50% to the traditional TSP and the other 50% to Roth.

I know people who have employers that match and they don't max that out. They're literally turning away free money.

Nah, 20+ years is a long time for all that money to compound. It's definitely not too late for you.

HSA is a powerful investment vehicle if your company offers it.

Tax free money going in, tax free growth, tax free distributions if you spend the money on medical bills.

In a 401k you put money in Pre taxed and when you cash it out when you retire you pay taxes, in a Roth you pay the tax right away

If your employer offers to match your 401k contribution you're an idiot not to do it. They're essentially offering to give you more money.

it's never too late to start saving for retirement.

the general guidelines are:

- pay off high interest debt
- take full advantage of employer match
- max out Roth IRA
- pay off low interest debt
- max out 401k/retirement plan
- add any additional savings to other LTS account
