Were people like "where the fuck are the first 3 episodes??"

The whole thing still blows my mind when I think about it.

If you were my sister, it was Star The Empire Strikes Back Wars. She knew it really got under my skin as a five year old.

Jesus, I had to look that up. I was five when Empire came out and actually remember going with my dad to see it.

Though the film was simply titled The Empire Strikes Back in its original promotional materials, the film still started with the title Star Wars on-screen which was followed by the opening crawl that gave the film's subtitle as Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

It was Star Wars, Star Wars ESB, and Star Wars ROTJ (people may have called it Star Wars 1,2,3)

Just when they announced the prequels, Lucas re-released the movies with numbers 4,5,6 along with many additional changes.

They added the IV and title in the rerelease in like 1981, or a few months before V.

The Episodes originates from when Lucas wrote the drafts for The Empire Strikes Back.
He originally intended to call it Episode 2.
He disliked the draft he got, so he started to write a draft with Darth Vader as Lukes father as a joke, just to think out of the box and get some ideas to the real draft. He started to like the idea, and started to write up the backstory. After a while, he discovered that it was enough to create a trilogy before the trilogy he was working on, and simply called TESB for Episode V.
The movies were not named with the Episodes until the 90s, but they were named with their Episode numbers at the intro title with the start of TESB. All home releases after TESB had the Episode number included, and it was added to A New Hope when it was rereleased in theatres in the early 80s.

They didn't start numbering the old trilogy until Phantom Menace was revealed.

Edit: Wait, they did it a few months after A New Hope released? I...always thought they waited until the prequel trilogy started.
