A 200lb human running away from a creature so small that its weight doesn't even register on any normal scale.

So, since we're bigger, we should be able to win in a fist-fight. Maneuverability and having a piercing weapon against soft flesh have nothing to do with it? You sound like Vanderkaum in Xenogears.

Of course we would win in a fist fight.

Seriously think it through. Imagine if you actually tried to fight a wasp.

Here's what would happen:

1. Wasps stings you, this hurts a bit but does no lasting damage
2. You fucking crush it into paste effortlessly

3. You still feel pain
4. There's no achievement notification in the top right of your vision

There's nothing to be afraid of if you leave them alone. I lived in an area with a high wasp population for a year and never had an incident.

I grew up around a lot of types of wasps.I would follow and kill the solid reds and the dark red/black assed ones.Only ones I run from are cicada killers and bumblebees. All the others like dirt dobbers and Hornets I leave alone cause of the spiders they kill.

Cicada killers aren't even aggressive allegedly, but they are fucking huge and scary so I run too lol

Depends on the species. Some wasps are chill and will leave you alone for the most part and others are aggressive dicks.

This is pretty ridiculous considering there are numerous things that are a fraction of our size that can cause immense pain or even death to us.

Wasps are typically not one of them though. They're just crazy bastards, and that's why we're afraid of them. They will kill themselves just to annoy us.

And goddamit stop bringing up uncommon exotic wasps that literally no one encounters regularly and how you have a relative that is mortally allergic to them. I'm talking about your garden variety pest and your garden variety Joe who's worst fear is getting an itchy boo-boo.

Exotic? Maybe to you in your chilly Scotland and all the rest Europe. But for many of us, we can only hope to not have to encounter one.

I lived in Kenya, Nigeria, South Korea, Australia and Sri Lanka. I know all about that stuff.

Still reckon most people are afraid of wasps not because of an actual mortal threat and because of an instinctive urge to avoid things that look and sound freaky.

When I was a kid, me and the neighborhood kids would go around our block knocking down wasp nests by throwing rocks at them. We did this a lot actually. Only got stung once. In my back yard patio, saw a nest and threw a toy at it, then I just walked away like nothing happened lol. One wasp flew onto the top of my head and stung me. Not much penetration there, had a bit of a headache from it.

I'm in Southern Arizona. We have all manner of stinging and biting things here.

Rattlesnakes and vipers
Scorpions
Black widows
Gila monsters

There's also the feral pigs known as javelina that are aggressive as fuck.

Been stung by a bark scorpion. Worst pain I've ever felt.

When I was a house painter I had this one house where I had to take all the shutters off beforehand to prep for powerwashing.

22 shutters and every God damn one of them had wasps behind them. Imagine being up 25 feet on a ladder unscrewing a shutter and a bunch of fucking wasps fly out trying to fuck you up. So I'm trying not to fall off while also trying to pick them off in mid air with a can of spray.

I only got stung once all day though.

There really aren't a lot of flying insects that bite.

They definitely bite. I accidentally leaned my arm on one and it bit me. The pain difference in a bite and sting is very noticeable

I don't have a problem with honeybees, bumblebees, or carpenter bees, they'll all pretty much leave you alone if you don't fuck with them.

Yellowjackets, OTOH, are the Travis Bickle's of the insect world: "You lookin' at me? You lookin' at ME?"

As the pic said (I'm on my phone at work ATM so I can't post it):

Do you see this?
Do you know what this is?
This is a wasp.
It is not a bee.
It does not pollinate things.
It does not make honey.
It is a motherfucking wasp.
You cannot defeat the wasp.
The wasp is never alone.
It is always surrounded by other, even more violent and aggressive wasps, who are, in turn, surrounded by even more.
When you see a wasp, do you know what you do you?
You stand the fuck still.
You chill the fuck out, and hope the wasp doesn't put you on its list of things it wants to fuck up today.
You stand there and wait for the wasp to finish its rampage and move on.
AND THEN YOU GO THE FUCK HOME.
