Even though I started gaming in the 80s with the NES, I would have to say that my first time playing phantasy star online, well, online, was the most mind-blowing for me.

No one me or the family knew had a PC with the internet in those days (and those online modems that released for the snes and genesis were nowhere in sight in south carolina. Even if they were, my family had no PC or anything to even take advantage of having the internet until the year 2,000), so online gaming was still a foreign concept to me.

Here comes the dreamcast with it's built in 56k modem. As a huge rpg fan, and someone that was curious on how an online rpg would work (I heard stories about how fun diablo 2 was for PC players, and wanted to try something like that on consoles), I went in completely blind and bought phantasy star online day 1 of it's NA release.

.....man, going online with PSO and popping my online gaming cherry had to be the most amazing gaming experience to me ever. Being make a class and play with 3 others, looking for rares, chatting with the keyboard, having a friends list....the addiction was real for a then 18 year old me. I never experienced anything like this ever, so I was constantly wanting to play this every single moment of the day.

My addiction actually got unhealthy for a good bit, but when it comes to gaming moments that made me jaw drop, first time online rpg gaming is definitely at the top of my list.

Streets of Rage 2(?) when Mr. X sends you back to stage 6 depending on how you answer a question

i was playing co-op with my mom, and we got to the last level. i was mashing buttons to get through the dialogue faster, and she kept being like "hey, read what it says!" i ignored her then we got sent back

edit: this event made my draw drop because at my young age at the time, i could never even think of a video game doing something like that. always read the goddamn dialogue friendos.

Devil May Cry 3, the first Vergil fight
Jak 2, Jak speaking
Ocarina of Time, how bittersweet the ending was
Using the nuke for the first time in Turok 2
Seeing Samus' reflection in Metroid Prime
The Deep Dive movie in Kingdom Hearts 1 (duel wielding was the coolest shit to me back then)
The original Bioshock trailer.

Oh, Disgaea! Chapter 8- Laharl throws a fit because his prinnies are leaving to go get reincarnated in the light of the Red Moon. When he finally succeeds in defeating the guardians, he discovers that one of the prinnies is his mom, who killed herself in a magic spell that saved his life. He relents.

Too many to name, but the immediate ones that come to mind are
Demon's Souls, facing the Tower Knight for the first time. All I could think was 'how the hell am I taking this guy down?'

Playing Super Mario 64 for the first time at Blockbuster. I had no idea how to move in 3 dimensions, and the controller wasn't intuitive. I came back at week later and I immediately felt like I was born with the game in my hands. Everything just clicked.

Got a 64 a few days later.

For me, it was the moment that didn't happen. When the PS3 was being released, there was a little game called Killing Day that was given a small trailer. Now at the time, the things in the game were pretty incredible. These days most of those things are commonplace.

FFVII has too many moments for me to list, and I've mentioned them plenty of times before.

For a more recent example, Portal 2.

"What? Are you still alive?! You are joking! You have got to be kidding me!
Well, I'm still in control, and I have no idea how to fix this place! Oh, you had to play bloody cat-and-mouse, didn't you?! While people were trying to work! Yeah, well, now all of us are going to pay the price, 'cause we're all gonna bloody die! Oh, brilliant, yeah!

Take one last look at your precious human moon, because it cannot help you now!"

If I were to illustrate manga-style my reaction, I would be placed in one of those black backgrounds with a shocked expression as I suddenly realized what I had to do. "No... No fucking way. It can't be..."

I slowly aimed the portal gun at the moon, and fired.

Hearthstone - Tried dungeon run solo game lost 5 times to final boss the exact same way:

Shit starting hand, mulligan, and first 5 turn card draws are 7-10 mana cards. While boss gets perfect mana curve. I uninstalled after this bullshit and left a 1 star review on play store.

I can handle losing because of being outplayed but losing because "Fuck you for not being a streamer and advertising our game for free on twitch!" well fuck you too Blizzard I will spend my time and money on games that are fun and require skill.

Battlefield - Ended up knifing an entire squad because the teammate the squad spawned on was running towards an objective and I was chasing him so they literally spawned in front of me one at a time.

Many of the summons in FF8. Also, Shiva in FF10, and all of the summons in FF15.

The beginning of Route C in Nier: Automata. I was like "Oh... So I guess everything before was just prologue."

And Super Mario Odyssey when Mario Cappy's Bowser and not only do you play as him but the music turns into a vocalized remix of his boss music from 64. I was so pumped!

There was a moment in Mass Effect, I think 3?. I was playing purely as a paragon the whole trilogy and at some point in the story Kai Leng fatally injures one of your crew members, eventually after the boss fight with him, I was watching the cutscene after and a RENEGADE prompt came up but because I was so drawn into it, I just kinda freaked out and slapped it by accident without realizing what it was. The ONE evil deed my Shepard ever did was stabbing that bastard to death. It was kind of amazing, like killing his friend was the one thing he couldn't Superman his way through. "That was for Thane, you son of a bitch."

When I played The Darkness, after either a loading screen or a cutscene (I forget which), the game puts you in the subway. It looked so good I didn't realize it was gameplay so after about 20 seconds of nothing happening, I tapped the joystick and was like "Ohhhh!".

Hitman: Blood Money. The Mardi Gras level, I think that was the first time I had seen that particular technology used to put so many NPCs in one place at a time, it was pretty jawdropping and I kinda take it for granted these days.

Obviously there are many more, just trying to add ones I haven't seen in here already.

Oh yeah, Life is Strange has some good ones, like when you're talking the girl down from suicide and you can't use your time power mechanic. If you wanted to save her you either had to have stopped to talk to her AND remembered what she said and looked at the items in her room, or you get extremely lucky. I was surprised at that being in there.
