The short version is that it started with concerns about nepotism between indie game journalists and the indie game community that quickly spiraled out of control and became mostly about culture wars with a small group continuing the ethics fight but losing the battle over public perception of what gamergate is.

You'll find the significant number of articles saying the gamergate is purely about sexism, but you'll also find the Society of professional journalists acknowledging the ethical concerns that were brought up in the beginning. So it really is more two very different things under the same hashtag.

Because the corrupt mainstream media (MSM) sided with their friends in the gaming industry to perpetuate a false narrative demonizing the righteous intentions of Gamergate.

It was an egregious example of Fake News propaganda protecting special interests, and perhaps the catalyst of the ensuing populist uprising against such, that was personified (or hijacked) by President Donald Trump.

I still can't really wrap my head around the concept. It seems currently it's just an ever present boogieman and an insult for people the media doesn't like. I'm not sure if the insult is warranted or not.

Gamergate is pretty much dead today, don't listen to the games journalists, they just want to stay relevant because their publications are dying.

Comicsgate is a much needed movement that came way too late, the Comic Book industry is pretty much dead now. It would've had impact if it came around 2013-2014 when comics started going to shit.

Animegate is a minor movement as it's almost west exclusive.

well it includes that but I think it predated the whole vic thing. I think modern animegate is mostly focusing on Vic but in the early days there was stuff about just like censorship in anime or adding lines to dialogue that were not in the original japanese.

let's see....I cant find it and I don't remember the name of the anime but....a while back there was a video going around on youtube showing a clip from a show, in original japanese with subtitles and then the I think funimation dub. and in the original 2 girls are talking about their hair I think. and how it looks nice or the girl changed it? something like that. then in the dub, one of the girls says something totally different, talking about the male patriarchy I think. it was added in for no reason and was not the original script

animegate is against things like that. I believe anime should just translate directly the script but not change the plot or make them say things they aren't saying in japanese

Oh, yeah, I remember that. And watching that anime and thinking that that line felt really out of place for the show and the character.
